I've been out in some mighty cold weather living up here in the northern Mn border. (We are known as the Icebox of the Nation.) The lens will want to frost up. You can wrap handwarmers around your lens but the best tip I can give you, is to keep a lens cloth with you and frequently wipe of the lens. I've done a lot of northern lights photos and have learned the hard way. Bring a lens cloth and it will certainly help.

Think of it as an "artsy-crafty-hobby" as a sideline to your regular photography. Other people know it's AI so no harm done and you still have your original photography. I love your image. I have not done any AI yet but it's in the back of my mind. What program did you use?

If you don't need the ultra-fast frame rate or video capabilities the Z7 produces identical image quality for stills.

But what about eye tracking? Is that good on the Z7?

It's a great lens for night (landscape?) photography. I think most people in my photoclub have it and they are all happy with it. It's very sharp but does need a little fixing for horizon distortion. I love it and would I buy it again? Yes!

I think this is an amazing image!! I do agree with Linda though..even if the clouds in the sky were just a tad lighter. Overall...love it!

There is talent in the "making" of this photo. I am memesmerized by the clouds. One instance where being in the right place at the right time. And, being unprepared as he was, darkroom talent was great! Would be fun to see the original negative.

Yes..so very worth it!! I love to process my RAW photos to see what I can pull out it them. They are my negatives and have more data than a Jpeg. In Adobe LR I can batch process most times. Then work on the "keepers" individually if needed. Does not have to take a long time.

Ok, This should give you a realistic idea. The major criticism of the lens is that shooting into bright lights creates odd artifacts.

Below are 3 images, taken within a few mins of each other. No sharpening applied in post processing.

The 1st is merely a 50mm image, (full frame) to show you the scene. Taken with a Zeiss Milvus 50mm 1.4, f8, iso 125 using d850

The 2nd is full frame using the 500pf of a building under construction about 1/2 mile away. again at f8 & iso 125.

The 3rd image is a 100% crop taken near the center of image #2.

I am impressed! Thank you for this comparison!! I did order the lens and think I might keep my old Tamron 150-600. I have a lens for night photography so I'm not too worried about using it at night. Also have the Nikon 24-70 and the Nikon 70-200. I should sell the 70-200 it just sits on the shelf. Bought it for my granddaughter's volleyball and when she graduated, I just don't use it anymore. Thanks again.

Agree with BilNikon.

The 500 PF is much better than the 300 PF, or even the AF-s 300 2.8. I use it under more controlled landscape conditions. I lack experience with the Tamron so can't compare directly, but have very strong hunch it would be a step up. I use the d850 and am a real stickler for technique and clarity. The 500 PF is outstanding, on par with the Zeiss 135 f2.

Thank you!
