I appreciate your reply. The lenses you mention are the ones that I expect to use most often. The wider angled lenses will capture more of the activity through the canal. I plan to leave them safely locked in my stateroom when we're out and about Panama. I expect to use the 100-400 ii + 1.4X iii for the birds of Costa Rica.

I'll be on a National Geographic cruise and land excursion at the Panama canal and Costa Rica. I'm trying to decide which of my Canon L lenses to pack. I have the 11-24, 16-35, 24-70, 70-200, 100-44 and the 1.4x extender. I'm not opposed to packing all but would, for obvious reasons, prefer not to. Any suggestions? Thanks.

To all that have replied to my upcoming Viking River cruise trip to Egypt and Jordan, I greatly appreciate your advice. Because of COVID, the trip was delayed from last March to this October. I found the advice very useful on what equipment to bring as well as experiences with the dusty conditions, street vendors, camel rides, local police. I'm packing soon but favoring taking my Canon 5D4, 5D3, 16-35 f4, 24-70 f2.8 (2), 70-200 f2.8 (2) and the 1.4Xiii. The last two will be for photos from the balloon ride. My 11-24 and 100-400 are great lenses but are too heavy for the little use they'll likely get. I'll also bring my Canon PowerShot G1X iii for when a DSLR is not practical. Any more thought?

I have a US version 300 f4L that I’m looking to sell at a fair price. It’s in very good shape and has been recently checked by Canon CPS. If you’re interested, I’ll provide recent photos.

Greetings,
I'm not new to Ugly Hedgehog but this is my first attempt to search the universe for advice on my upcoming Viking River trip to Egypt and Jordan. I'm a Canon shooter looking for advice on lenses to bring and general equipment recommendations. My normal body is the 5D3&4 and have the typical array of common L lenses plus the 11-24 f4. Any ideas?
Thanks, Jeff in NJ

The trip is less than a week away and I "pulled the trigger" and bought the canon 11-24.
From B&H. I packed my carry-on backpack and just under 17 pounds with that UWA lense, the 24-70, the 100-400, 5D3 and 5D4. I have my 70-200 in my personal item bag and have my monopod and extender in my checked luggage. Probably too many lenses but hate to use my 100-400 for shots that my 70-200 f2.8 can get with better bokeh. I'll report back to the group when I get back.

Mike, I appreciate your reply. I'm not big with PP work so would like to get my images without it. With the 5D4, I plan to shot some videos and bring a mike for better audio.

It sounds like you didn't use a lens wider than 24 mm. I have the 16-35 so I'll bring it. Is changing lenses on the continent a viable option? Many blogs recommend against it. Thanks.

Well... I'm getting closer to my trip on January 5 and after doing a lot of reading, I'm bringing my Canon 5D3, a new 5D4, the 100-400 ver. 2, 24-70 ver. 2 and a wide angle. Here's my dilemma. I currently have to decide between a 16-35 f4 and the 11-24 f4. The 11-24 is a sharper lens and will likely give me some incredible ultra-wide shots, but it's heavier and takes up more room in my bag. This trip is a once in a lifetime opportunity and I'm favoring the UWA lens for shots that will be outstanding. Any thoughts on my choice of the wide angle lens?

Great advice, thanks. I bought the Think Tank Airport International for my safari a few years ago (an outstanding piece of luggage) so I'll just fill it with as many lenses as possible.

I'm taking a Nat Geo cruise in January and have several Canon lens options. I was hoping to get everyone's opinion as to which to bring. When we're not on the ship, we'll be on Zodiacs and glaciers. My camera body is the Canon 5D3 and the easy answer is my new Canon 100-400 ver II (a very convenient and sharp lens). However, my best photos have a nice bokeh that I can only get with my 2.8 lenses (24-70mm, 70-200mm, 300mm). I was considering bringing these lenses along and for extra reach, use my 1.4 and 2.0 extenders. I've also seen some great wide angle photos taken by others and will likely find room in my bag for my 16-35 f4L, as well. I know this is a very heavy option but my back is still strong and weight has never been a problem.
Thanks for your thoughts.

Finally getting back to the forum with my experience on the Viking River cruise. Our trip was their "Grand European" cruise which exceeded my expectations. It was a May-June trip and we had three weeks of sunshine. I brought my new Canon 5D3 which was perfect along with my new 24-70 f2.8L II, the 70-200 f2.8L II and the 16-35 f4L. I don't regret taking any of these lenses. The 24-70 was my primary excursion glass and was all I used except when I knew I was touring cathedrals, when I also carried the 16-35. The 70-200 never left the ship but was perfect for shoreline scenes and distant castles, both in sunshine and at night. An 11-24 f4L would have resulted in incredible cathedral photos if I had it with me.

AGO, I feel the same way. Although it was more the case in Africa and Peru, the longer lens allows me to capture the local people without being in their face. However, I do hate changing lenses just to get one or two shots. Juggling heavy glass in crowds makes me nervous. Using a second body solves that issue but creates others when I travel with my wife. When I was by myself late afternoon in Angor Wat, I had two bodies on me with the tripod, etc. It allowed me to get some of the best shots of the trip to Siem Reap. Obviously, that was a different type of trip from what this will be so perhaps I should "bring it down a notch."
