I'll be on a National Geographic cruise and land excursion at the Panama canal and Costa Rica. I'm trying to decide which of my Canon L lenses to pack. I have the 11-24, 16-35, 24-70, 70-200, 100-44 and the 1.4x extender. I'm not opposed to packing all but would, for obvious reasons, prefer not to. Any suggestions? Thanks.

If I had to pick from that list for my style of shooting I would take the 24-70 and the 70-200.
I like to travel light. Maybe pack the extender.

But ultimately the choice is up to you.

I appreciate your reply. The lenses you mention are the ones that I expect to use most often. The wider angled lenses will capture more of the activity through the canal. I plan to leave them safely locked in my stateroom when we're out and about Panama. I expect to use the 100-400 ii + 1.4X iii for the birds of Costa Rica.

If it is a National Geographic cruise they have experts that can help you with your decision, why not call your tour. After all, they are the ones who are experts on your trip.

I took this trip about 4 years ago. You definitely need a wide angle for the canal and also for the Costa Rica landscape and as long as possible for the wildlife. About 1/3 of my pictures were taken at 400+mm. About 10% at 28mm and the rest were spread fairly evenly between the two extremes. If you are travelling light (always a good idea) take the 24-70, the 70-200 and the 1.4 extender and call it a day. It is a rain forest so if you have a second body bring it as a backup just in case the weather gets to your primary body.

Yup, it depends...
One person could use the 70-200 mostly, another may use the 24-70 mostly.
Depends on what one wants to shoot....

I know I would have my 200-600 for the jungle.

Been there, done that. Most of my shots would be covered by the 24-70. Unfortunately, I didn't have much use for my 70-200 but I was glad to have it with me. Take less, and enjoy the trip.

Your trip is why Sony makes the RX10m4 - at the very least as a back-up. Travel light and enjoy the trip

Weather caution, if you'll be on the east side of Costa Rica you will need something to protect the equipment from the sudden downpours this time of year. It rains, a lot, especially near the coast. The west side of the country is in the dry season so that should be safe. If you go to the rain forest, well, they named it right.

I agree with Longshadow. We've been there, so I know what you can anticipate. Those two lenses will do you just fine.

National Geo has a facility at Galeta.
The Navy sent me there, 1964-66.
Didn't have a camera then, but photography was forbidden.
