Out of curiosity, what were the correction numbers that you came up with? Also have you shot with those numbers and do you see an improvement?

Thanks,

On the 80-400, +11. On the 28-300, +4. I haven't shot them yet, but the target images were noticeably sharper.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. I finally got it to work. The AF button on the front would keep resetting if I turned the camera off, so I left it on, picked AF-S S setting - with two S's (there was no single AF-S) and then the AF-S from the menu screen. A bit of a pain - was never that hard with my D7000, but all's well that ends well. Again, thanks for all the help.

Dear All,

Thanks for the suggestions but still getting error message.

Regarding lenses, tried two. Nikkor ED 28-300 and Nikkor ED 80-400 attempts with with VR both on and off.

Regarding AF-S, the only setting I see is: Autofocus - A2 AF-S priority selection - Release/Focus. I've tried with release both on and off. The focus has been set to single point as I primarily do wildlife photography. Not that it seems to matter, but I regularly use back button focus but disabled that feature during test attempts. Mode dial is set at "A"

I am trying to fine tune my lenses with Focal software but I keep getting an error message saying the camera is not set to AF-S, even though AF-S clearly appears on the camera screen. Focal has provided a number of suggestions but none have worked. They also say no one else has reported this type of problem. Nikon also provided suggestions, but they didn't work either. I am including the instructions from Nikon below. The camera is a D750 and the firmware is current. Anybody else have a problem like this one?

Press and hold the 2 buttons that have the green dots next to them for 2-3 seconds. Your screen will blink off and back on
⦁ Power camera Off
⦁ Remove the lens
⦁ Remove the battery
⦁ Remove the memory card(s)
⦁ Reassemble the camera in any order you like and power back on
Now press the "Menu " button
⦁ Select the Camera Icon
⦁ Select the "Reset Photo Shooting Menu"
⦁ Press OK"
Under the Movie Camera Icon
⦁ Select "Reset Movie Shooting Menu"
⦁ Press "OK"
Under the Pencil Icon
⦁ Press "OK"
⦁ Select "Reset Custom Custom Settings"
⦁ Press "OK"
Under the Wrench Icon
⦁ Select the "Reset User Settings"
⦁ Pick each U setting and press "OK"
⦁ Power camera off and back on

Only caveat could be weight if you are flying on small planes. For a three-week trip I was limited to 50 pounds total, including carry-on, clothing and camera gear. They even weighed me. Choice may be between a second camera body or a second pair of hiking shoes.

Thanks. I've often wondered.

I'm not into IR, at least not for the moment, but it never ceases to amaze me about the variety and quality of the discussion topics that come up on UHH.

I use the Panasonic Lumix and it works well as a point and shoot with good image quality. It will fit in a shirt pocket if you have a travel shirt or safari shirt. Only downside is there is no external lens cap so you have to be careful not to damage the diaphragm blades that close over the lens elements when the camera is turned off.

Thanks for the replies thus far. I won't be doing any sports, but am usually under the trees for nature stuff and flash is frequently out of the question. I also note the 70-200 is a bit over 2 pounds heavier, which adds concerns for travel where weight limits are involved. I think I'll see if the local camera shop has one as a rental and take it from there. Again, thanks.

Any one have experience with the AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8E FL ED VR? I have a 70 to 300 Nikkor 4.5 that's OK for nature stuff (mostly what I shoot), and would sure like the added speed of the f/2.8, but wonder about the benefit considering cost and the loss of 100 mm. (My 70-300 is a DX, the 70-200 is FX - I am presently shooting on a D7000).

Thanks for the reply. I ordered it from B&H, which comes as a CD (or DVD - I'm not sure) along with a target. Thanks also for the suggestion on covering the eyepiece, I wouldn't have thought about that. Even after five years I still have the eyepiece shield that came with the camera, which I heretofore have never used. I knew it would come in handy eventually.

Thanks for the feedback. I did purchase the software (awaiting delivery) and am anxious to see the results, both on my newer automatic lenses and my old non-auto glass (Nikkor).

You can see the difference without even enlarging the image. Looks like I'm sold. Thanks.

Thanks. Sounds like it's worth shelling out a few bucks for a more rewarding image experience.

Thanks for the prompt reply. I've tried a few of the paper type tools with mixed results, so am looking for something more reliable, especially since I shoot a lot of macro and have been disappointed that the razor-sharp focus I see in the viewfinder is not always the same image when it's opened in Photoshop.
