Thank you for letting me know that was your personal FB page several days after my comment to you about it, and for telling me what your photography FB page was. I have purchased four of your books, so obviously I like your work. If you have any more books, I have not found them. Thank you also for posting that about me on your FB page without telling them that I had in fact commented several days ago on your FB, and had you told me that was your personal site then, I would have known. When I did a search on FB for you, your personal site is all that came up, listed as public figure, same as a lot of sites, so I am sorry I thought that was your business FB page!

He has written several photography books and advertises that he has a photography website on FB. Don't subscribe. He posts very little about photography and mostly about political issues. I UNSUBSCRIBED! I can watch mainstream media for biased political views, I don't want it from someone that pretends he has a photography website.

This is another secret to save money. Buy the size of filter for your largest lens and use the cheap step rings to fit other lens. The step rings are around $10 +/- and that way, your filter will fit on all your lens.

Can't live without a good circular polarizing filter if you shoot landscapes, especially with water. I love my Hoya Pro1 digital filter and it was not that expensive for what it does.

The moon is hard to shoot because it is such a bright light. If you can shoot before it is pitch black, it is better. I set my camera like this, ISO - 100, white balance either K-4000, daylight, or tungsten, manual settings - speed 125, F/11, focus infinity or just shy of.

I agree that using a gun is a life changing event... so is death at the hands of someone else. I would rather deal with all the legal issues later but at least Im alive...

You have got that right! In TX, you can actually shoot someone near your car, yard, or house, and be fine, as long as they did something to make you feel threatened.

I too am a woman who wanders the woods & beaches alone and sometimes in the dark. My boyfriend fishes while I wander so I let him know what area I will be in, when he can start worrying & make sure I have phone, camera & supplies in my pockets. I try to pay attention to what is around me & what the birds are doing. They are great at letting you know when something isn't right. I also have a permit & carry a .45/.410 American. Fits in a small pocket or in top of my boot. Boyfriend says he is more worried about what/who I run into than he is about me. Bless him!

beats a 280 all to heck now doesn't it. I like you am a believer in the big bullet going in, bigger hole coming out theory. you don't need 18 rounds of 9mm to stop an attack at close range. If you do then instead of shooting photos with your camera, you need to be shooting targets with your hangun. As a former cop, i salute your taking responsability for your safety. the police can not be everywhere, one major accident can tie up most of a small towns cops. a police whistle will do you no good and in fact will probably get the snot kicked out of you. a tripod makes a nice club, a folding knife in a camera bag or even a large cannister of pepper spray would work better. I also hope you are a member of the national rifle association, who are batteling the obama liberals repeated attempts to circumvent the 2nd amendment.

This solitary Starburst anemone, Anthopleura sola, is mostly green, with blue and brown as secondary colors.

Photographed at -1-foot low tide, Royal Palms State Beach, San Pedro CA.

Hand-held Nikon D90 at ISO 400, with Nikkor 105-mm macro lens, 1/60-sec at f/11, late afternoon sun and Nikon SB-600 with O-Flash 3/4-ringlight attachment.

Absolutely beautiful! The colors are amazing and it looks like an abstract painting, not a living thing.

is today still this week??

This is an ongoing Thread... hopefully people will post what they think is the best photo from the week.... hopefully they will get out and take at least one photo a week. Would prefer no old photos.... just very recent. Might even start a theme of the week ... no contest just some place where we can stimulate the mind and the eye behind the lens.

I like your idea. Since I had surgery this week, I couldn't go out to take photos but took a few photos of things around my house. Just playing with my camera.

Personally, I love the challenge of shooting INTO the sun, and NOT getting 'lens flares' or artifacts. I don't have any people shots handy that demonstrate that, but here is a 'sun rays' shot (directly into the sun - without the flares or garbage (my goal was the rays... for some inspirational cards & calendars)): http://mercer.smugmug.com/NaturePhotography/Sky-sunset-sundowns-Lightning/Sun-Rays/16024004_gk7K5H/1201231931_MZCr9

Those are absolutely beautiful! In nature, the sun rays work. On faces, they don't.

Good captures. What were your settings?

F/9, 30 sec exposure, 100 ISO, on the lightning. Prob about the same on the car but I didn't look that up.

I am a beginner, but here are a few of mine. I love taking pics of lots of things, trying to get better.

My first attempt at lightning, from my patio.

My car looks like I have a flat. Should have turned off house lights.
