Geesh, can we keep it a bit more classy than most of the other forums? "sh*t my pants," really?

I do not think Ebay is "robbing me" of 12% when I sell on there site at all. Where else can you get instant exposure to the World Market within minutes, knowing that it is safe (from attacks from potential bad guys), mostly guaranteed and has the convenience of PayPal attached to it? Been using Ebay for 16 years!

I have not had success with Craigslist nor Etsy nor LetGo. I've listed products that were in demand on those sites, that wouldn't sell go for top dollar, within hours on Ebay when I listed with them!

Sometimes a novel perspective of something very common becomes something unique and wonderful. That is when a person with a camera becomes a photographer. Some, however will never have the "eye" to understand.

You have just summed up my dilema and my goal in one elegant comment! Developing an eye for the unique and the wonderful and reaching for the goal of calling my self a photographer...all before the end of my life. I feel I'm falling a bit behind!

I am guilty as anyone when it comes to posting mundane photos of the same item, BIRDS. I do attempt to photograph other items but that is restricted for many different reasons. Why do I continue to post images of the same birds doing the same thing almost every day? Simple, it is what I have available for me to take photos of. I post them daily to get comments from people who may have never looked much beyond the first page or two any one of the different forums. I also get a comment or two as to where have I been if I do not post for a week or so and other posts that they like my colorful bird photos.

The total net of this thread I hope to get a better understanding as to why people like me continue to post so much "mundane" photos. For me is because I can.

Go ahead and flame, I can take it.

There is little I find mundane about birds. It is their very simplicity and naturalness that makes them fascinating and beautiful!

When I posted above, "There is a fine line between the mundane and the exceptional," I was thinking of Henri's seminal photos in black and white of the man jumping the water puddle and the photo from the hallway/staircase of a man going by on a bicycle. It is quite possible that those shots could be taken as mundane to the folks who saw them "back then." The brilliance of them is on the other side of the "fine line." I don't see a whole lot of technical perfection in either photo, but I see boatloads of emotion and pleasure.

As one returning to photography after decades off, and having begun with box cameras in the '50's, one thing I've noticed is that some photos are almost "too" amazing and seem so "massaged" and technically perfect, that they don't have enough edginess or believability. A philosophical proprietary comment perhaps, but it is what I see in the gap of time since I've seriously done photography.

Saying a photo is "amazing," when indeed it is mediocre, like most of my stuff, does a dis-service to the one trying to get better at the task of photography. I would prefer constructive criticism. That's just me. And that's all I've got to say about that.

There is a certain pleasure in taking a photo in film and developing in the lab that just doesn't transfer in our hurried "get it done" world. The Olympus OM-1 was my first SLR camera and I took it everywhere in my international travels. I will always have an OM-1 in one form or another. Having said that, there is no way that it can take the place of a decent digital camera for moving objects, specialty situations, etc. But, I can assure you, that I get far more pleasure from using my OM-1 film camera than my D7200. Having just retired, I plan to shoot film with the OM-1 and my Mamiya RZ67 Pro much more and save the DSLR for when I really need it.

One of my favorite things to do is to go to my local used book store and try to score on classic old photography books. I remember "The Joy of Photography" and several others that had a wealth of information for the student of photography.
