15" Macbook pro with 24" 2nd display...SSD drive for start up and applications...cram it full of ram. External drives for backup and storage. Lightroom 5 to catalog and edit.

I great set up....then you get take the MacBook on trips. Also don't rule out refurbished from the Apple Store I bought my MacBook Air that way and learned that many refurbished units are from people who did not take delivery...it saves hundreds nearly $400 with loads of memory and a fast processor.

Donkas1946, I just rented the 2x iii extender to try on my 100-400. I was thinking of buying it. At this point I will NOT be buying it. The AF will not work and I have to manual focus. The lens is heavy enough and it's hard to get a real sharp imagine with out adding more length to the lens. Also the FStop only goes to 11 instead of 5.6 without extender. We rented the extender from http://www.lensrentals.com/. We do want to try on my husband 70-200 which might work better because without the extender his lens goes down to 2.8.
Donkas1946, I just rented the 2x iii extender to t... (show quote)

I was going to suggest the same...to rent the extender....if think one can rent it for 4 days at a cost of $25 (plus sipping). Better than spending the $500

I use the Sigma 150-500 on my 5DMiii with out worry of the issues that come with the extender

Like folks have said many time. "There is no free lunch"

Before going to the expense of changing any lighting I would try to spot meter off of an 18% grey card. I am not entirely sure it will fix it for you but worth the attempt

Look at workwear - some overalls and trousers come with sewn in knee pads and lots of pockets!!!!!wear with a flyfishing jacket and you will be the 'bees knees'.....

Galls.com sells tatactical gear. One of their products is great for field photographers ... Look at the 5.11 trousers (men's ans women's) that have sewn pockets in the knees (inside of the pant) that takes a pad. More, there are many pockets for small gear.

Many thanks for the recommendations!!! Bryan Peterson, duly noted!!!!

His Field Guide is also a great book....it is sort of a combination of his books Understanding Exposure and Shutter Speed. I think the title is Field Guide for Digital Photographers. Anyhow it is written by Peterson so you should be able to locate it....(I can't locate mine now ).

You will still lose stops of light with the teleconvertor.

Actually I am thinking of doing the same. I also have the Canon 70-200 L II and think of adding the 2x teleconvertor . I currently use the Sigma 150-500 and find that to be a great sharp lens. I would add the teleconvertor in my pack along with the Canon lens for greater flexibility in the field but ponder the justification of cost for this added convince.

When I am looking for 'the reach' I use the 150-500 in my 7d...otherwise I am carrying the 5d

The vest. I found a YouTube instructional that answered my question though. Thanks.

I use the vest and do not have a battery grip (yet). It holds the camera snugly against your body when walking, hiking or scrambling over rough trails. It works very well. Often I use it with a pack (putting the vest on first)

Getting lighting right with speedlite is a trial and error tha needs many test shots...unlike studio stoves there is no modeling lights. It is best to preset up your lighting prior to your subject arriving. Taking test shots of yourself with the self timer works.

I use the same set up and just purchased a 30' ETTL cord (not the coiled kind) and find I can find the right lighting faster.

Yet, with using the wireless function on my Canon 7d I can leave the flashes in manual and control the ratio and or strength of the lighting via the camera menu....you get faster with it, but preset up is best

Good luck

I have been transferring my photos to Light Room via my SD and CF cards, but would like to leave the cards in the Canon 5D3 and transfer by cable. I have found that Lightroom won't accept a direct import. I have had to save to a separate file and then import from there. Has anyone else experienced this and if so have you found a way to import directly to Lightroom by cable.

That is the way I do it. Actually it is a good idea...a tad slower but less chance of damaging a card..either card. I use the cable, get Lightroom running then turn on the camera (with cables connected). Then it recognizes the camera

Good luck

Make a new file in CS5 and make your signature with whatever brush you want. Save it as a brush preset (that will allow you to use it in CS). Now save your save for web as a PNG (transparent). Now you can make a watermark preset for LR using this file as a graticule rather than a text. Make one for a dark background one for a light background. In LR you will be able to select the one you want
