Even tho this is a rather snide response... it makes a good point. 35mm and 50mm are pretty close together. And since you already have a 35mm (though you don't say which one), it's possible you'd be happier with the 60mm.

However, it depends. Would longer focal length be more useful to you? Or would a larger aperture that can render stronger background blur be more useful. The 50mm f/1.4 is two full stops faster than the 60mm f/2.8.

A Sigma EX 50mm f/1.4 is also an older design a-mount lens that will require an adapter to use it on an a6000. The Sigma 60mm f/2.8 DN, on the other hand, is an e-mount lens that can be used directly on an a6000.

Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts. I have the Sony 35mm OSS prime lens and also have the necessary adapter which I use with my Minolta 100mm macro lens. Still pondering but you’ve helped..

Sony A600? Do you maybe mean a6000?

Sigma EX 60mm f/1.4? I don't see any of those, either. I do see a Sigma 60mm f/2.8 DN for Sony e-mount. There's quite a difference between f/1.4 and f/2.8.

Sigma EX 50mm f/1.4 comes in Sony a-mount. Those are made for the Sony DSLR models... not for mirrorless cameras like the a6000, if that's what you've got.

Sigma does offer a 56mm f/1.4 DN lens in e-mount.... it's more expensive, though.

On an a6000, if that's what you've got, any of these lenses are short telephotos. The f/1.4 lenses will be able to produce shallower depth of field effects. That can be useful, for example, in portraits... to "separate" the sharply focused subject from a blurred background. Depending upon distance, you can produce some background blur effect with an f/2.8 lens, but can achieve a lot stronger blur with a two-stop-faster f/1.4 lens.

Or, maybe you do mean Sony A600... the a-mount DSLR from 2012, 18MP, APS-C format.

If an A600 is what you've got, then the EX 50mm f/1.4 in a-mount can serve as a short telephoto (nice portrait) lens. There also is a Sigma EX 50mm f/2.8... a macro lens.

I don't find any Sigma EX 60mm lenses. If an A600 is what you've got, the Sigma 60mm f/2.8 DN and 56mm f/1.4 DN lenses won't work, AFAIK. The Sigma "DN" series for Sony are e-mount lenses.

It is possible to adapt an a-mount lens for use on an e-mount camera.

It is NOT possible to adapt an e-mount lens to use it on an a-mount camera.

Apologies, I made a complete hash of my query. I have a Sony A6000 and am thinking about getting the Sigma 60mm f2.8 or the Sony 50mm f1.8. Any thoughts much appreciated. I like to shoot nature, already have a macro lens.

Hi folks

contemplating adding a new lens to my line up, some great deals on eBay and elsewhere right now. I already have the Sony 35mm prime lens and various zoom lenses. Would a 50mm or 60mm serve me better?

As always, really appreciate hearing your opinions.

My bad, I have a Sony A6000 and am thinking about getting the Sigma 60 mm f2.8.

If you have the LA -EA4 adapter The 500mm f8 reflex is a GREAT lens - but not a zoom. The Sigma 100-300 f4 is also a GREAT lens that you can use Clear Image Zoom with. With any A-mount lens you use you will need to do a focus calibration/adjustment. I have never used the Minolta 100-400 - but I do not like f6.7 lenses in general !
.

Thanks so much for your recommendations. I got a really great deal on a Minolta AF APO lens, not crazy about the f6.7 either but will be shooting in daylight so hoping it won't be too much of an issue.

Thanks again and happy shooting.

Hi folks

Does anyone have experience with using this combination of camera and lens together? I have the necessary Sony adapter, sadly the adapter prevents me from attaching the camera to my tripod, would love to know if there’s a ‘fix’ for this. Interested in a longer zoom range but don’t have the money to go for anything over $300.

As always your comments and suggestions greatly appreciated. I already own the Sony 55-210mm kit lens and the Sony 18-135 mm lens.

Cheers

Gilly,
While I do acknowledge your decision to concentrate on this Tamron lens, I don’t know which lenses you considered in the process. So "just for kicks", here’s the URL for a recent article from a UK e-magazine:

Thanks so much, will check it out. Many folks have recommended the Minolta 100mm macro and from what I’ve read it may very well be what I’m looking for. The link is much appreciated, I’m always open to suggestions and tips.

Works well on AF except in low light but it is a 2.8, so usually not a problem
Have fun

Thanks so much. So many options to sort thru. Love having this forum to help clarify things. Happy shooting. Looking forward to finally getting a ‘real’ macro lens.

If that lens does not have a focus motor, you will not have autofocus with the LEA3. The LEA4 costs more for a reason. It has the motor to have autofocus.

Thanks for the clarification. Sounds like the LEA4 is the way to go. Am I right in thinking then if I chose a lens with internal focusing I could use the LEA3? Just for future reference.

Think I’m set on the Minolta after hearing all the rave reviews.

Love the help I get through this forum, thanks again.

If you want to start with an inexpensive adapter this one (or something like it) will get you going (manual focus), and then get the fancy one when you have the spare change. Severeal of the adapter makers have units like this. https://www.amazon.com/Fotodiox-Lens-Mount-Adapter-Mount/dp/B003Y2YE5S I think it was $19.95...... I have several of the Fotodiox, they are not top kit, but will do a decent job. I use them for testing different lens that I buy where I don't have the correct body.

On buying from Japan - I have not, but others on UHH have and have reported good transactions, and you are protected by the Ebay protections, which work well.

I did pose a question to Imagemeister on the LEA3 versus 4, as the ads state it will work (I don't have e-mount bodies, just A-mount, but do have a lot of A-mount lenses) hopefully he can clear it up for us.
