The point and shoot he needs is a Winchester .270 with a 3x9 scope!

I have both lens and use them on an 18 pixel Canon 60D. This setup will serve you well. Both of mine are more than adequate. Maybe add a 50mm 1.8 for low light situations.

Probably out at night. Horses are kept stalled or at least shaded during the day because sunlight will fade their coats.
