I have used Darktable for years and it is both very powerful and free. Simple edits are a breeze. Much more complex edits are possible. I like its implementation of healing better than Lightroom’s. Masking is more flexible in Darktable, but Lightroom has a few mask options that are easier to use. I find navigating the interface much easier in Darktable, but that may be mostly because I’ve been using it longer.

Darktable is cross platform, so it works on Windows and Linux. With Lightroom I have to remote a different computer to edit, which is annoying.

I find Lightroom’s colors a little nicer immediately upon opening a raw file.

Thanks for the info and I will look at it. Sound like maybe it doesn’t work with Apple?

Check out this video from OnOne Photo Raw. It may answer all your questions. I quit Adobe LR on the final perpetual license. You can get OnOne with a perpetual or subscription your choice. Here is the link to the video: https://youtu.be/5BYizexgRLU

2 questions:

Why? Is it the cost? That seems to be the primary reason people consider dumping LR.

I don't believe it's enough to just state that you are dumping something considered useful by so many. If you have a good reason, let us know. It might convince someone else. Or it might enable someone else to get you to reverse your decision.

I have nothing against LR and have used it for years. I’m in my late 60s and am doing significantly less photography (some of my equipment is listed for sale). $120/yr doesn’t break
the bank, but I’m just using it less and less all the time. I’ve always been happy with it, just at an age where I’m looking at where I spend the $$ and why.

I am thinking of dumping my subscription to LR. 2 questions:
1 Best alternative?
2 What do I do with all my NEF files?

There is an app called Garden Answers. You take a pic thru the app and it matches you with like pictures. Works reasonably well.
