If you’re considering the Leica d-lux7 look at the Panasonic LX-100ii which is the same camera with the same Leica 24-75 1.7 2.8 lens. It even has a macro setting to close in on things I might normally step on. I find it’s a great travel camera that doesn’t need as much grunt to move around.

I’ve had no issues over the years with mirrorless camera sensors - but I am careful with my fur.

Affinity makes a great Photoshop replacement and On1 is a worthy Lightroom replacement especially if you desire digital asset management. There’s more than enough Affinity tutorials available as is a 30 day trail. I believe it’s more intuitive than some software so less tutorials are required.

On1 may be worth considering. I’ve just recently started using it so from early findings it lets me catalog and rate photos as well as do raw editing.

Ok, let’s all line up at the back of a truck and scoop all our electronics, cameras, tripods that were just ripped out of the back of Best Buy last night. Imagine the savings! Then imagine how outraged we can be when we get raided and the goods confiscated. Where’s the privacy. Just imagine!

Here’s what I would try. I’ve done a fair bit of macro stacking though never have I done a 60 foot DOF stack. Set up camera with desired view on tripod and a shutter release or using 2 second delay adjust the stated quick focusing lens manually to nearest focus and take a shot and then turn focus ring a smidge (about 1/20th of the total lens focus ring turning ability) and take another shot then another smidge and another shot and repeat until at the farthest focus ability of the lens. Looking at the images one probably has some at the start and some at the end that are discards. Keep all those that have something in focus and then stack. Worth a try, at least there’s nothing more to buy.

For some real size/weight reduction it’s worth considing the micro 4/3rds Olympus and Panasonic line where one additionally saves considerably more bulk on the lenses and not just a few ounces on the camera body.

Thanks for all the responses so far. Basically I’m trying to overcome the quandary of how to make readily accessible, and hopefully somehow future compatible, digital files for family photos for the future. I’ve heard it said that this generation will be the first in quite a while that may not have old photos of themselves years from now. It’s a bit of an issue, what formats will be still around and who can find images years from now on clouds, a NAS, and obsolete half broken equipment. DVDs are going the way of the 8 track and even USB memory sticks are in the process of changing. I figure a SD card is nice and flat which could be carefully taped into the back of a book. Besides compatibility issues are also the reported longevity issue which I don’t really understand. What deteriorates in digital memory?

Is it possible, and if so how, to write edited jpgs on my computer to a SD card, in my case on a Macbook? My thought is it would be a good slim way to put a digital version of photos of a photo book in the back of the respective book.

I think I am missing something to know: if I have a 64gb card full of images and want to transfer them to my iPad, but the iPad has only 32gb memory,
the math does not seem to be right; does the iPad compress the images, allowing me to copy xxx number of images to it ? I bought a card reader for the
iPad years ago but never used it because of this reason

When using the “import” option within photos on an iPad, one can select which which ones to transfer and it lets you know which ones were previously transferred with a small check mark. I move certain ones for viewing or editing by card reader or wirelessly often and it works well. It’s especilly good for doing a quick selection process to decide which ones to keep or edit. Later I can “air drop” the keepers to my laptop for more editing or storage.

Affinity is a great program. Buy once for less than one years subscription and only upgrade if you want. Decent resources are also available as is a nice workbook. Subscription software is fine and good value if one makes good continual use of it but for a casual user who could go a couple months without doing PP a few months of non use can quickly make for an expensive couple of photos.

LX100 is a great little easy to carry camera with a Leica lens. Had mine for close to three years now. Lots of on camera controls such as a aperture ring and it even does macro.

For Windows Paint Shop Pro is economical, intuitive, and often on sale for $40 to $50. For Macs Affinity is great for about $80 or Elements gets most jobs done.
