Hello Rich,
I too am an amateur and take many types of photos in many different situations. I highly recommend checking out the Nikon Coolpix A1000 or B600. These are not expensive, less than $500 and will cover a multitude of situations with one small piece of equipment. Plus they produce good quality photos. They can zoom to any length you would likely need (near or far) for what you describe, have a 16MP sensor, image stabilization and other positive features you may like. A real plus in my opinion is that they are relatively small, quiet and won't get in the way of your enjoyment of the situations you encounter.
Enjoy what you do!

I have just acquired the new Nikon Coolpix P900. I have had a very short time to see what it can help me accomplish with limited skill. I take mostly nature / landscapes or views of people and scenes on trips.
I decided to get the P900 in order to have a wide range of capability and good quality with just one piece of equipment to carry. So far I am very happy with it!
All three attachments are hand held with no post adjustments.

I have been following this forum for a couple of months now. After reading this reply to rsummers, another first time user, I feel compelled to make my first post today.
Billy, despite what you say, this was absolutely a most rude and obnoxious comment.
First thing you say belittles the question: "Do ya really think...Not a chance in hell!!";
Second thing you say insults the questioner:
"So now engage brain huh....Easy huh so please engage brain before asking dumb questions and worse than dumb likely to lead to a very boring thread in which no one learns a damn thing including you."
The last thing you say - "By the way Im(sic) not rude as some will say just absolutely honest and cut through crap quickly. " proves you KNOW you are being rude and obnoxious. Claiming honesty and directness is just the way obnoxious people try to hide and justify their incivility. Any slightly useful information you may have by accident included was completely lost.
I would hope that rsummers will reconsider and come back to the forum - having the viewpoint of beginners to stimulate conversation can help all of us become better photographers - and maybe better people too!
