My wife and I stayed in a hotel overlooking this shipyard. We had a great one night stay in Norfolk!

We discovered this ghost town while driving the Miill Creek scenic route, a flintstone (gravel) road between Alta Vista and Alma, Kansas. The old general store still has everything in it just as it was when abandoned in the early 1900s. Old buckle shoes still on the shelves, In fact all the shelves are still stocked with those early date items!
The old hotel across the street is just as it was when abandoned at the same time. Table cloths, dishes and cutlery still on the tables and we were told the beds are still made up in the rooms. An older couple owned both the hotel and the general store and when his wife died he just up and left, leaving everything just as it was.
The place has a caretaker who just watches over it to see that no harm comes to it. When we started looking in the windows he was there in no time to make sure we didn't touch anything.

Okay, it seem we have some people hear with more then just Photography as an interest.

So, this thread is for the hunter, hunted, fish and fishers, or just any kind of out door type sport.

Please post your picture and the one with the biggest fish tale wins. None of that " it got away stuff" we need proof.

dang Rachel, you've got a set of guns to hold that fish up like that!

HI Picsnap...OK here are my thoughts
1. Flourite on quartz
2. Orpiment with trace Realgar
3. Druz quartz over Chrysocolla
4. the blue is Azurite and the green is Malachite on matrix
5. Calcite matrix and the pink may be cobaltion calcite
6. Orpiment and the red is trace Realgar
7. Chalcopyrite also called Peacock ore
8. Calcite or could be Gypsum
9. I believe druze quartz over Calcite
Some minerals are so hard to tell apart without testing, like using a lupe to see the crystal habit in the case of calcite and quartz when they are small specimans, I have to say these are real nice photos, I hope you post more!

Thanks Howie, I appreciate you and everyone for taking the time to look. You would have loved this collection that was auctioned. It was an estate sale. I was told by the auctioneer that the gentleman spent many years collecting. There was a very large showcase with specimens like yours that was auctioned, over 200 pcs. and there were quite a few rock buyers. I was lucky to get what I won.

hard to tell just from images... here's my $.02

#1 Fluourite
#2 Possibly Wulfenite in basalt matrix
#3 Prenite (guess...hard to tell from picture, calcite based)
#4 Malachite and Azurite (copper ore)
#5 Something Quartz-based
#6 = #2
#7 rainbow hematite (not Labradorite)
#8 looks like selenite (desert rose)

Here's my Geologist husband's id:

1) Calcite with something else. Will this react with HCL acid?
2) Calcopyrite
3) Drusy Calcite or Quartz. Will this react with HCL acid?
4) Calcopyrite
5) Calcite
6) Calcopyrite
7) Calcopyrite
8) Selenite or Gypsum
9) Pyrite on druzy quartz or calcite. Will any of this react with HCL acid?

Funny thing is that we do have rock bass in the Missouri river but I couldn't think of anything else to call it....It is what Corps dumps along the edge to help with holding the bank....but this was caught right under the spillway were there shouldn't be any rocks...and now after the flood there probably aren't any there anymore.
Now I have to go get some fish out for supper kind of talked me into it....lol

nejanet, that made me giggle. I thought we only had those bass here in these rocky creeks. The guys around here never catch them, they just keep the lures and break the lines. And to papayanirvana...you learn something new every day and I have to add you to the list of folks who enlarged my one brain cell.

Recipe for Cooking Rock Bass

First ya gotta catch it. Smother with butter. Add seasonings if desired. Wrap in foil. Place in coals of fire or direct sunlight. Cook until tender. Meanwhile, open that can of beanie weenies you brought and chow down.

picsnap, you said you bought more rocks. Are you gonna show them to us?
