I use that camera with that lens, and I'm usually very happy with the results. I'm wondering if you were shooting hand-held or with a tripod? Also, how close were you to the spiders?

I like high key photos. It looks like an album cover waiting for a title!

I'm a Canon user, so I can't tell you how to turn on your histogram while shooting. Pose it as a question in the forum....some Nikon user will be able to tell you.

I'm not sure what camera you are using, but if yours has the capability of shooting with the histogram on, that can really help you to see what you might be blowing out. If not, does your camera have the capability of letting you take a shot, then taking a look at the image with the histogram on so that you can make adjustments before your next shot. Manual is a tough mode to shoot in if your're not using LiveView and looking at the histogram.

On my monitor, your whole shot has a lot of yellow in it...the background too. Is this the untouched RAW or JPG image without processing? Do you know what your white balance selection was when you took the second photo?

I use my circular polarizer most of the time. It cuts down on glare in water, on leaves, etc. and can make greens really pop. It does eat a stop or two of light, so watch your histogram and exposure settings, which you probably do anyway.

You can try to find the closest Canon dealer, but you don't have to. Just go to the closest local camera shop - one that sells Nikon and Canon DSLRs. They can often clean your sensor for a $20 charge, and may even show you how to do it yourself if you ask. If they can't do it, they'll tell you where you can go in the area for this service. Sensor cleaning is just a regular part of camera care - get used to it!

What about Henri Cartier Bresson and his technique of catching that "in the moment" piece. Do a search for him.

I love how the wagon tongue leads you into the picture. I think I would have liked to see the whole tongue though. It's a nice diagonal that takes you into the rest of the frame.

My Canon 60D has a nice big LCD that rotates all sorts of ways. The reason I bought it is because I, too, had a hip replacement! I usually just put my camera on a tripod at the height I need it to be, then rotate the LCD so that I am able to use Live View and see whatever it is that I need to see without having to look through the viewfinder if I just can't bend that way.

The setting I would have been most concerned with on a day like that is exposure compensation. I probably would not have cranked up my ISO past 200. Honestly, those kind of days are best spent shooting looking downward, like at the forest floor, not upward with a gloomy sky in the background (unless gloomy is the look you are going for).

I love the idea of all the hands on Jasper, but it may be difficult to pull off. It looks like many of the people in the home are bedridden and/or physically challenged. That would make it hard for many of them to pose for any amount of time.

Sometimes, one very interesting face can make the photo. Do any of the ederly people you visit have a special "look" that moves you? Have that person's face next to the alpaca's and hugging, or nose to nose with your animal friend in special lighting, might be a powerful image.

You might want to try to shoot just a little earlier than dusk. It helps to equalize the brightness of the Christmas lights and the light still left in the sky. Also, use the Tungsten setting for white balance as that works best with those lights.
