I agree...ASKING the DJ to use his unused space can make your life sooooo much easier. GO DJ!

I'm in a related field (DJ) and face the same obstacles. We are also plagued with low rent competition. I do believe in the worth concept. Charge for what you are worth. If you want to charge more, you need to be worth more. What this means to me and my clients will be different than you and yours. For me, it was about extras such as up-lighting, video presentation, elegant facade, etc. No ipod DJ can offer what I can, therefore, I enjoy charging higher rates (at the expense of less work - which is actually a win). This, of course, assumes a base skill set.
The trend today, as I see it from the outside is two fold. Lower end, DIY type receptions. And higher end, multi-media receptions.
I don't do them often (relying mostly on referral), but Bridal Show's can get you in front of prospective clients. Takes a little work and money to give a professional presentation.
And for your pro's out there, would it be to much to ask the DJ if you can but your unused equipment at their booth? Just as a courtesy? Thanks.
Anyway, that probably wasn't much help. Good luck!
