Do you use UV filters for lens protection?

I was just wondering how many of you use UV filters simply to protect your lens.

I do, only because it was drilled into my head. I know a lot of people do not. When I buy a lens for $1250, I automatically add a B+W uv mc filter. I am constantly in the woods, up and down very steap hills. I also have OCD. LOL I think it's a well known fact now that they stop a "small" amount of light. The new question I have is their effect on auto focus speed. Shooting eagles in flight, many people there told me to take off my UV filter because it slows down auotfocus. I don't know???

All my lenses have UV filters....just for protection because everyone has me paranoid about lenses and I'm not the most cautious person out there with my equipment !

I think, if you're like me, I always use the camera's small light meter in Manual Focus. If any of my filters cut down light, the meter will show I need a different shutter speed or ISO.

I don't buy into a UV filter causing slower focusing. The focus works off of contrast so there would have to be a significant reduction in light to have an effect.
But then again it may depend on the quality of camera you're using.

My experience has been that the quality UV filters do NOT slow the autofocus function on any of my Nikons. However, I HAVE noticed a slight, or maybe just perceived, slowing of Autofocus when using a Skylight 1A in slightly hazy conditions.
I use UV filters religiously on all my valuable lenses, andboth my less valuable lenses most of the time. My personal feeling is that if your lense has a max aperture of f4 or more (smaller number like f2.8) then there is no significant difference as you are getting sufficient light under almost every circumstance. If you are using something like a 600mm f8 mirror lense? Definitely take off (or out) that filter as it will have a noticeable affect on anything but static shots.

I looked at a few articles that say a UV filter will darken the shot by 1/3 stop...but I don't think it slows down auto focus as you're compensating a darker shot through ISO, shutter speed, or f stop !

i use uv haze and also quite often us a polerizer to protect my lens
