Primarily landscape shots...the polarizer sounds like a great idea and maybe a X3.

Hi folks, I have a question for this esteemed group. I'm going to Colorado for vacation in mid October. I am shooting with a Nikon D3200, the 18-55mm kit lens and the 55-200mm. I am wondering which ND filter you guys would recommend....I've gotta keep the price down, so probably can't get away with a "set" of ND's....Thanks in advance for the input.

The new MacBook is not a Pro....the Pro's have ports and are faster and capable of more ram....my 15" is perfect for all the photography and video editing an amateur or professional will deal with. Apple has a laptop for all users. The new one is basically a more robust (and nicer looking) Air.

There aren't any, just the port where you charge it. You have to disconnect that to use it for anything else, and it isn't a typical USB port, so none of my stuff would work. I need a port to download pictures (or else a SD slot, also missing) and a port for the backup drive and I need all of it to work at once - if it's low on power I need it connected to the wall as well. I don't need to have to take turns charging the thing and using it. It would be way too fiddly and risky to use it for photography.

You must be looking at the MacBook Air.....the pro's have all the ports you need.

I will follow this as I have a macbook pro 2011 model with 8 ram and would love to know if an SSD would breathe new life into it. I mostly use it when I travel so I want to make it faster but not so badly I'm ready to fork over for a new one. The new MacBooks are very cute but appear to be totally useless to photographers since they have no ports, even the salesperson at the local Apple store admitted that.

What ports do they not have that you really need??

Not sure if I should post here or in the processing section (I'm sure the admin gods will let me know)

My 8 year old 24 inch iMac has lately been freezing and crashing when I process my images. I use Lr to Ps or DxO Optics Pro, then to Nik.
Any advice?
I have 8gb Ram and a 1tb hard drive (upgraded years ago).

If the drive is internal with the OS and all the software on it plus your photo storage, that is part of the problem. Move all your photos, import and storage off to an external drive. Your I/O is overloaded trying to handle all of that on one drive. You may not fix the problem entirely, but it should improve it somewhat until you decide what to do for an upgrade. Also, don't have all the imaging software running at the same time on the desktop, that also clogs up the I/O. Export from LR then close LR and open either PS or DxO, work in there, save and close and reopen LR. I know it's slower, but it should work for you.

My iMac is around 7 years old and my wife's is 6....both are running great with the exception of the DVD drive....but I spent $25 for a USB DVD burner and am still crusing along. I'm running mine on OSX Snow Leopard (about 2 or 3 years old) to keep running some very old programs I use for video work, but the wife's machine is now running the latest version of OSX 10.10.3 with no problems at all. I network both machines with my new MacBook Pro.....they all just work.

I too have been using Macs for years without any virus problems. The hardware in each machine is specific to that type machine and OS X is tailored to the hardware where as Windows has to have drivers for everything that might get installed so it is very bloated with stuff you will never use.

If you want a desktop, go with the 21" or 27" iMac if a laptop the 15" would be the best bet. If you are anywhere close to an Apple store, go in and tell the staff what you want to do and the software you want to run and they will steer you to the best choice for you, NOT necessarily the most expensive. The Apple sales folks dare not paid on commission.

Good luck and let us know what you decide to do.

Just studying all the materials, but looks like Photos is coming up short other than the feature of having your photos available through the cloud. Thinking it might be best to get myself up to speed on PhotoShop and then put the photos I want to share into a folder and import it ito Photos.. Anyone else have thoughts about this as a workflow?

sounds good.....there are additional rumors from the Apple Rumors sites that Apple intends on upgrading Photos as they go with more "Pro Tools" to make it more "Aperture" like. Or should I say more Pro friendly.....

I've been using Aperture for years, after I graduated from iPhoto because it wasn't meeting my needs. Of course, I was quite alarmed when I heard Apple was going to do away with Aperture, as I have tens of thousands of photos in my Aperture library. And from what I read here Photos would be a step toward a somewhat improved, but not completely improved, iPhoto.

A couple of years back I signed up for a class in Photoshop at my local community college. However, I quickly discovered that it was not nearly as intuitive as Aperture and decided that Photoshop was not the tool for me so I dropped the class and continued along happily using Aperture – until I got word of the changes Apple had planned.

So now I have a few questions which I hope knowledgeable people on this board can answer.

1. Am I correct in understanding that installing the next version of the OS will automatically replace iPhoto with Photos and move my iPhoto library into Photos?

2. Will the installation automatically do the same with my Aperture library or will it remain untouched until I decide to move my library to Photos (right now it seems highly unlikely to me that I would do that)?

Of course, question #2 is critical to me. I would like to know that my Aperture library is not going to be affected by a system upgrade, otherwise I feel like Apple has really screwed me over (and other Aperture users as well!). Although I'm already feeling the Apple screwdriver bearing down on me (and others like me)!

Until I get a response I'm not doing any upgrades to my systemÂ…

Thanks for your help!

Re-read the first message in this thread.........the answer to question 1 is yes.......according to the first message in the thread, it looks like your Aperture files will be safe till you move them.
