Not sure if I should post here or in the processing section (I'm sure the admin gods will let me know)

My 8 year old 24 inch iMac has lately been freezing and crashing when I process my images. I use Lr to Ps or DxO Optics Pro, then to Nik.
Any advice?
I have 8gb Ram and a 1tb hard drive (upgraded years ago).

Apple tech support is where you need to be. 8 years old?Maybe you need to be in the Mac Store.

That's a lot of programs for an 8 yr old machine to manage on minimal ram. How much spare room on your hard drive? I had a similar problem with similar iMac last year. It wasn't crashing but some programs began to stall or quit. I replaced it with a Mac mini with 16 ram, put my photos on an external drive, and it zips through everything. Sometimes we can ask more of an old machine than it can give.

8 year old and the d800 files? Oye, you're going to stress that Mac. Is that the max ram you can put into it? Do you have an ssd drive?

I installed the max ram years ago at 8gb. The hdd was installed about 7 years ago, so I doubt it was an solid state.

I think it is time to upgrade?

Uh yeah...

Max your ram (at least 16gb) and get an SSD drive around 512GB for your main drive and programs...then run external drives around 1 or 2 TB each.

Keep that and reserve it for email and simple tasks like that. Then prowl the Apple site and see what's available. A boot SSD makes a big difference. Don't rush into a purchase.

Can't you put 2x8 in it?

Thanks Jerry. I think that is what I'll do. I have been looking at the refurbs and see some good deals with 16gb and a 3tb fusion drive with retina display.

If the drive is internal with the OS and all the software on it plus your photo storage, that is part of the problem. Move all your photos, import and storage off to an external drive. Your I/O is overloaded trying to handle all of that on one drive. You may not fix the problem entirely, but it should improve it somewhat until you decide what to do for an upgrade. Also, don't have all the imaging software running at the same time on the desktop, that also clogs up the I/O. Export from LR then close LR and open either PS or DxO, work in there, save and close and reopen LR. I know it's slower, but it should work for you.
