Would this be a good deal for a lens or should I pass on it? Thanks Ken

I just picked up a used Canon 20D over the weekend. I plan on using it as a starter camera. It came with 3 Canon lens (ef 50mm 1:1.8 II, ef 38-80mm 1:4-5.6 III, ef-s 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6 is II) 3 batteries, a charger, a Lowepro backpack style bag. I paid $200 dollars for everything. After getting home and charging up a battery, the camera works fine. I did find that the base of the 18-55mm lens was cracked and was seperating from the lens housing. I will probably buy another 18-55mm lens.

Locally I found someone that has a Canon EOS Rebel Ti (35mm film) camera, with a Canon Zoom lens EF 28-90mm 1:4-5.6 II and a camera bag for $50 dollars. Would this lens work on my Canon 20D camera? Click on the link for a picture of the lens. I would have a silver lens on my black 20D.

I have read that the 38-80mm lens is not really a good lens. I would use the 28-90 lens to replace the 38-80mm lens and then just buy another 18-55mm lens.

Or would the 28-90mm lens replace both the 18-55 and the 38-80mm lens? Thanks Ken

It does hurt when they sting you. Saturday night one stung me in the corner of the right eye brow. My eye glasses hid most of the swelling. The swelling is just about gone. I am thankful that it was in the eye brow and not in the eye ball. This afternoon on stung me on the right side of my left fore finger between the knuckle and the 1st joint. I will be glad to have them gone.

These little ground hornets were getting in my trailer. I finally found them getting in through a hole in the sheet rock by the dryer vent. I sprayed Raid Max Foaming Wasp & hornet killer into the hole. Then I plugged the hold with plenty of sheet rock mud. I found the nest under the trailer in the insulation. I have already called an exterminator and waiting on him to return my call. When they sting, it hurts for a while.

I took these pictures with the used Canon 20D that I bought yesterday. I took the top picture with the 35-80mm lens. The ISO was set on 800. The knob was set on "P". It was getting dusk. When I looked at the picture, I was surprised to see the 4 flying hornets headed toward the nest. I was approx. 5 or 6 feet from the nest and not getting any closer.

I got the one in the bottom 3 pictures with the fly swatter. I placed him on a sheet of copy paper. I decided to try the 50mm lens on him at different angles. I think the know was set to the portrait setting with the ISO at 800.

All pictures were taken free hand with me holding the camera. I hope I did a decent job taking the photos. I have a lot too learn.

A big thumbs up to Canon. I think that is one of the reasons that I bought the used Canon 20D instead of a Nikon.

Thanks for the tips on the lens. I will be checking it out. If I do decide to buy another lens, should I stay with the 18-55mm or look at something different? Thanks Ken

I remember some of your loser comments on one of my for sale posts. Since my camera was outside your means, why did you open your stinking mouth of a flytrap? Nice to see Karma has visited your recent $200 purpose with a broken lens that will cost you another $200 expense to replace. You'd be wasting every cent to fix it rather than replace. Has your behavior improved in these intervening years?

Sir: I haven't signed into this forum in 3 or 4 years. Maybe you have me mixed up with someone else.
Why don't you post a link so I can see what comments you are referring to. Have a good day.

Peterff: The other lens is actually a 35-80mm. Most of the shots will be outside during the day. The 20D will be used as a starter camera. My funds are limited so that is another reason that I went with this camera for $200 bucks.

After looking closer at the broken base, I think that the mounting base is actually cracked and not the lens housing. If I had a damaged and unuseable lens, I would be willing to try to change out the mounting base. It is only 4 tiny screws to remove. It should not be that complicated to replace the mounting base. I did notice a couple small pieces of trash or something in the lens, so the lens would need to be cleaned also.

Would it might be better, to just go ahead and buy another lens?

When I first signed on: I had the other Canon. I found I didn't really use it and so I sold it. Just recently, I have found myself wanting to give this another try.

Hi everyone: It has been a few years since I actually posted. I just picked up a used Canon 20D earlier today. I contacted the seller and they did not know about it. I take the blame for not looking at the lens close enough. Honestly I never even thought about the possibility of the base of the lens being cracked. I should have put each lens on the camera and looked it over that way also.

I guess my question is: What would be my best course of action to take care of the lens? Do I send it back to Canon, or an authorized repair facility or just buy another lens? I planned on using the camera next weekend at the 42nd annual 2017 Louisiana State High Power Rifle Silhouette match. I am unable to post a couple of pictures. Thanks Ken

I have a store within 20 miles, but my problem is resisting booting up the laptop and ordering from B&H or MT Shooter. It is easier than hopping in the car and driving for a 1/2 hour to buy something.

But if you drive there, then you have the enjoyment of putting your hands on it before you buy it. And no waiting for the gorillas in the big brown truck to handle it. :-D

Phil, sometimes I'm glad that their isn't a camera store within a hundred miles of me.

Actually there is: It is Bennett's Camera at 3230 Severn Ave. Metairie, La. 70002 (504) 885 9050 This is at the corner of 18th street I believe. I was in the store less than a month ago.

I just can't see why you would need a lens that big.

That is a good idea, but I think that our work schedules and days off don't agree.

I live about an hour north of New Orleans and I have never been there. That would be a great way to get some hands on time to learn how to take photos.
