Canon makes all kinds of things... printers, cameras, etc.,
Nikon only makes cameras and other optical goods.

Pros and Cons to everything, most people complain about the cost of thier Nikon equip, but in your case this is moot point as your Canon cost you more than a Nikon would have.

I look at Canon as a "Jack of all" company, but look to Nikon as Master of thier own.

This is an electro-mechanical world so it does not seem to matter which brand you go with... it is all a matter of time.

If you already have a substantial investment with Canon goodies to go along with that Sti than I would suggest a new Canon, if not I suggest you spend some time deciding on your next purchase very carefully, at the same time remember that it is really just a black box...

There are many many factors that go into taking a great photo, the least important factor is the model of camera used to capture the image.

I suggest you get something that is intuitive and "feels right" to you, and do a lot of homework before you purchase another dud... reviews and ratings will always be a better source for decision making than the salesman at the store or internet hype and marketing, etc.,

You can spend a fortune on the little "Black Box" these days and still take horrible photo's... Instead, invest in high quality lens's and maybe even some additional/continual training... there is always something more for all of us to learn in regard to photography, I learn more and more everyday I shoot.

Sorry to hear of your situation, hopefully Canon will stand behind thier products for you, best of wishes with your endeavors.

Martin

wanted to add, yes I am a fan of "portrait pro", if you are good with the sliders, on don't go in extreme edits, you get great results, pic of my youngest sister. I hope she doesn't find out I posted the unedited version... lol

Hope you don't mind I tried Imagenomics Portraiture on this one to compare with portrait professional. What do you think?

I am also a fan of Imagenomics portraiture, I have the PS plug-in and the Apple Aperature Plug-in.

I wish I could remember how to use masking technique.... anyone know any good web-tutoring sites for Imagenomics portraiture?

What I do is choose a photo. Make whatever changes that need to be made first. Then duplicate the layer, choose portraiture and make the adjustments as I want them. Then I slide the opacity to the degree of smoothness I want. It is key NOT to lose the skins texture or it will look plastic. Then I create a mask layer and choose the brush tool "black" and brush out the eyes and anything that you want to bring back to it's original texture. Then flatten the image and finishing doing whatever tweaks you want. I hope this helps. I will see if I can find a tutorial and post it.

I am such a perfectionist, I had to retry this. The first one lost too much resolution in the crop. I didn't download yours right the first time, I just copied it. So my second time around, I just cropped, adjusted the exposure and had to remove them hairbands from her wrists! Then I did the portraiture plugin but backed off a bit since I didn't want to lose her natural skin texture which is almost inpossible to see anyway. Then I duped the layer and added the topaz plugin to brighten her face and give it some ooomph. I had to add a mask to brush out the crazy stuff it did to her white shirt. Oh and I did use the dodge tool on her eyes to lighten them up a bit.

I am a big fan of off camera flash...
it looks like the sun was low on the horizon and I would have tried using a flash with a softbox (or similar) to her front left.

I see that you shot at 200mm and Auto exposure, Aperture-priority AE, 1/80 sec, f/2.8, ISO 400, Compensation: -2/3

Maybe the compensation was a bit low since she is not in direct sunlight? The edits have warmed up the scene nicely.

Still, a great shot even as-is, and I like the PP that others have done, it gives this scene the off camera flash look...

cheers!

I have to tell you I messed up on this shoot. only had one flash that was functional, I had four with me. I left my trigger wires at home and was too far away.
I often laugh at people saying they don't need off camera flash because of Edit software. You can do alot with software like VIvesa and Lightroom(I have both). But from my trials and tribulations its not the same. Better to use all the tools and not be lazy. My plan just didn't come together yesterday.

I had to make out with natural light here.

A fellow strobist.
And yep I got a softbox , 4 shoot through umbrellas and a few Honeycombs as well as a multitude of diffusers.

First photo of my newest motorbike taken in an alley at around noon.
Too much background information?
Should I have moved the bike away and added some depth?

what would you have done different?

Lose the background. Place the bike in a dark parking lot at night with strong overhear lighting, such as a 7-Eleven store. You'll get killer shots of a cool bike.

Awesome idea!

another idea... park the bike in front of a lake or on the waterfront...

Sportster? for some reason the front tire looks oversize...

I would of bought a Honda LOL. But really, not a good background for that bike. Enjoy your ride!

I work on a military base, Honda is not a good thing on base....
But I still have a couple of them anyway. :)
