Many Hedgehogers know Indrajeet Singh as "Micki". He has shown many of his phenomenal images on this site. I am deeply saddened to report that Micki died last Thursday. We became very good friends in 2015 when my wife, Elizabeth, and I have traveled together with Micki in India. He personally escorted us on two amazing wildlife photo shoots. He was an icon to many bird photographers, published in National Geographic, a consultant to Nikon, brilliant, highly educated, charming, blessed with a magnificent sense of humor and a superb teacher with with an enclycopedic knowledge of photographic physics and engineering. He transformed my interest in photography into a passion. Photography has lost one of its greatest giants.
Although it was mentioned above, and in consideration of how you describe your interests, I would encourage a serious look at the Nikon 28-300 zoom. I have primes I love and use, but for a walk around lens that has you covered from 28 to 300 mm, it is a bargain, especially if you can get a refurbished by Nikon lens. As you expand your experience, go for the heavier, pricier, glass that fits your interests. If you want a prime for more telephoto work, that wont break the bank, consider the Nikon f4 300mm with a 1.4 tele-extender (giving you a 420mm reach). If you want a serious macro, consider the newer Tameron 90mm micro that comes with vibration control. (About $650 new). You will love the D850.

All due respect to the last comment, I have found Topaz customer Service to be THE WORST of any program's service I have used. This varies from no response to requests, irrelevant response to the questions or concerns and NO response to complaints about service.
Thanks for all the input, everyone!!
Thank you all for your responses. I have put the Tameron to the test with beautiful results.
It is my understanding that automatic focus-stacking requires an AF-S lens and, that an AF only lens will not work. Does anyone know whether the Tameron 90mm f2.8 macro will work for focus-stacking? Is anyone aware of a list of Nikon-compatible lenses that will work for macro focus-stacking?
