As a 40 yr. professional advertising photographer, I've been using CaptureOne since 2005. It is not a program for putting wings on pigs (that's what PS is for) but it has consistently been the best all-round RAW processor out there and is the standard in my business segment. It does everything you need in terms of superior workflow and highest quality image conversion all within a customizable script. You even import and use your Lightroom catalogs if you wish. I find it to be a very intuitive program with very powerful features
PS - In terms of highlight and shadow recovery, you should try the latest version. I think you'll be suitably impressed.

PS - In the world of computing, applications and processes, we all have our own discrete knowledge based on need. My advice is to not try and look at tackling the problem as a whole, but rather to incorporate the things that apply to your needs. Let's be honest, NOBODY understands all of the Photoshop program and I can't imagine that there is a real need to...

I'm working my way into it. It has some great features. I turned the focus mask on unintentionally, so when the green globs showed up I was completely at a loss. Now if something similar happens my first place to check will be the View menu. Live and learn. I see there is a manual to download - are there any good manuals on the market?

Again, I would refer to the tutorials. There are some basic ones that will lead you to understanding the program. I would also say that as long as you keep a copy of the RAWS there is little chance of screwing up the images. I also think that you will find most of the application to be pretty intuitive.

Bingo - many thanks. It is focus mask and it does toggle on and off in the View menu. I don't know how it got turned on (although me wandering around the program could have had something to do with it), but it really bummed me out when I couldn't figure out what it was. I thought it was an error in the program and erased and reinstalled, but the green blotches were still there. Next step is to figure out what they are for and what I should do with them. The image was shot with the 15-45 mm XC lens that came with the camera (I quickly upgraded lenses). I shot with that lens because I wanted a slightly wider angle, but that was the first image from that lens that I opened with Capture One 21 and so I didn't know for sure if it was the lens, or the program, or my graphics card. Something goes weird and you think the worst.

I've been using CaptureOne since the early 2000's. They have very comprehensive tutorials online/Youtube. They are well worth taking a look at. I think you'll be surprised at how much the program can do.

Not the exposure warning. Focus mask is the correct selection.

This program was discontinued over 7 years ago. It doesn't even run on the modern Apple OS's. You might consider moving on......

It appears that the wive approval thread has sent the discussion in a very productive direction. It is certainly more germane to life.

Friend of mine who owns a coffee shop asked me for a print to use as decoration. Nothing fancy.

Since I do not like going on the cheap I had a 30x30 print made on metal.

Next thing I knew someone wanted to purchase the print. I sold it for 450.00 over the phone and the guy did not even blink (I did not see him - just figure of speech). I should have gone for 800.00 but then again being greedy would have been an error, still since there was no quibble I know it was under priced...

Next time, if there is one. Now I need to look for a different image to print as I do not feel right printing the same thing and loaning it. I have a few candidates thought.

Oh, don't think I walked with the 450. I gave my friend 10% plus the credit card cost...

I think you got away like a bandit!! High-end commercial galleries take 50% -60% for artists with an established reputation and a following. I'm guessing you don't fit this profile otherwise you wouldn't be on this forum. Your "art" is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. Van Gough only sold 1-2 paintings. Think about that! Don't get too fat-headed when it comes to the value of your images. Be thankful that someone it. Your friend offered you a venue to have your work seen. If I were you I would take him out to a nice dinner. You are not Picasso.

Ansel Adams was actually really into technology and he developed the "zone system" so that he had more control of his images. There is no doubt in my mind that he would have adopted digital and he would certainly would have shot in Raw. I can't imagine him wanting less information to work with. He also would have used the largest quality sensor size he could get.
