Yes.
In fact jpg is all I use for startrails.
They work faster, and save me from having to convert thousands of files.
I'm surprised you did just try it.
Here, but don't get lost....

thank you for your reply. I shot these images last Nov and didn't have software to stack or computer with enough ram to download software. I now have a new computer, a card reader and Adobe CC. I still don't know how to use it, but I am learning.
First time trying and screwed up. I was shooting raw+jpeg for the first time and when I downloaded the images to my computer, I didn't realize that I had to download each card separately so I lost the raw images. I spent 3 nights in big bend and got really good images, but unfortunately they are jpeg. can I stack them to create star trails?
I promise I will never ever shoot raw + Jpeg again! :)
thank you for the information, and I will try to recover the raw files. However, back to the original question, can you use jpeg images to stack and create star trails. I shot 2 hours of 30 sec exposure with 2 sec intervals and 2 hours of 4 min exposures with 2 sec intervals. Just wondering if all is lost or not.
I didn't know I had to download them separately. Live and learn.
I messed up. Only downloaded the sd card with jpeg images then reformatted both cards. Can you stack star images if you only have the jpegs? thanks
Thank you RWR for the information. It is much appreciated. You can google for knowledge and learn nothing. Ask someone with experience and you can find the answer to almost anything :)
that's not really fare now is it? I am ALL about repurpose, recycle, reuse. Anything to lessen my footprint on this earth. Why would I not use this if it would not harm my camera? It's never about the money for me. Never has been. Just because it's old and out of date isn't a reason to discard it. Light is light. That doesn't change.
I have vintage flash unit. Owner's manual states it is compatible with Nikon FA,FE-2,FG, FG-20,EM, FE, F3, new FM-2 and FM-2. I used it with a canon A1 back in the days. Works great. Anyone know if I can use this on a D800? Manual does not state the voltage, but it uses 4 AA batteries. If you cant mount it on the camera, can you use remote? Not worth possibly damaging my camera, but hey, if it works then I don't have to buy a new one.
welcome. Glad you are here. I still own 2 Canon A1's, bought the second one for my kid who never really got into it. Now in the digital world and still learning, always learning! Great forum for advice and tips. :)
Awe, poor pup pups. How did you feel about putting on your Sunday best for church when you were a kid. I bet they hate it as much as we did.
Don't be discouraged. I bought my first DSLR, Nikon D100, and was so overwhelmed that I didn't use it for two years. I just kept shooting film. Then while on a transatlantic cruise I ran out of film and couldn't find it anywhere. I was forced to use the DSLR or not take pictures. One of the crew members stopped to talk to me about the camera and with his help in just a few minutes, I had a good enough understanding of the camera that I was comfortable using it. I have learned much since then, mostly trial and error, but the bottom line is keep shooting. The two most helpful books were Bryon Peterson’s *Understanding Exposure and David Busch's guide for the camera. I too live north of Houston and any classes or clubs are at least an hour away so not really an option for me. At least with digital the images are free so shoot, shoot, shoot. I learn best by doing it wrong until I get it right. Hope this helps.
I am actually going to a private cabin that is only a few miles from the park so not hampered by rules. There are miles and miles of dirt roads around there with no light pollution. I am going to explore in the daytime and pick favorite sites for night. Thank you so much for your input.
These look like they were shot from same perspective. The 24 looks much closer than the 14. did you move in closer, or is there really that much difference in fov? Still waffling between the 14 2.8 and the 24 1.4. Just cant make up my mind.
