I'm sorry you feel worse. We didn't have time on this visit and we spent two days in Sirmione last year and didn't make it then either. I guess we'll have to go back.

They could’ve posted the closed status before one made the long walk to the gates on the north end. Still, it was a very interesting city with its history and architecture. And it gave my wife extra shopping time.

Continuing our evening cruise, we passed by the Grottoes of Catullus (first two photos), the name given to the ruins of a Roman villa built between the end of the 1st century BC and the beginning of the 1st century AD at the northernmost end of the Sirmione peninsula on the southern shore of Lake Garda. The archaeological complex, which always remained uncovered over time, has been the subject of academic research since the 15th century. Today, it is the most valuable testament of the Roman period in Sirmione's territory and an exceptional find of a Roman villa in northern Italy.

A Different Hotel and a drive through Sirmione: After a wonderful cruise on Lake Garda to celebrate our 51st wedding anniversary, we walked back to the hotel we had originally reserved. They had found us a room at Hotel Olivi. However, the hotel was farther out on the peninsula where Sirmione is located and they had parking. That resulted in another cart ride back to the parking lot and then me driving the rental car into the ZTL, through the Scaliger Castle and the narrow streets of Sirmione to the hotel. Fortunately, it was later and there weren’t as many people. However, it was still challenging and we were not really certain about how to get to the hotel. I folded the side mirrors to enable driving past pedestrians with only a few inches of clearance on either side in many places. We made it through the castle and past the many shops and then to the hotel without hitting anybody. Probably the most unique drive I’ve ever done. After that and the drive from Venice, I was confident I could drive anywhere in Europe, enough so that I drove a rental car all over Italy for a month the following (last) year. The Olivi was a very nice hotel, nice enough that we stayed there again i.

After a good night’s sleep, we had a great breakfast at the hotel and then it was time for the 2 hour drive to Lake Como. After missing the Lake Garda turnoff and a harrowing drive through Sirmione on the way to the hotel using paper maps, I activated the European data plan on my phone and we used the GPS to navigate through Sirmione to Lake Como. It was still a challenge driving through Sirmione, but overall it went smoothly.

Last photo: I had planned to stop at Monza (the Temple of Speed and home of the Italian Grand Prix) on our way to Lake Como. However, we only rented the car for one day and we got away a little later than planned, it would have added another day to the car rental charge plus possible late fees and we were anxious to get to Lake Como, so we skipped it. We got there the following year (last year) though.

Next up: The rest of the drive to Lake Como

Thanks for the Grottoes of Catullus photos. We tried to visit the grounds in 2016 but picked a day they were closed, most disappointing. Now I feel even worse.

rjaywallace passed away. He bought my Canon AE-1P and the 28mm lens.

Ralph passed away in 1/2020. We had tentative plans to meet for coffee next time I drove through his area but that time was cut too short. He was a real gentleman.

Gee, and I was going to add that Octagon barns were common here on Ozaukee county, N of Milwaukee, built to better withstand the winds off Lake Michigan. Three still stand just SE of me. But you've counted nine sides on the Indiana barn so I can't offer anything on that other than it's an interesting find.

I was talking to a friend who came from Wisconsin, and she told me some amusing things about the state. I remember two of them. When she lived there, oleo was not available for sale. If you wanted imitation butter, you had to cross the state line.

"Wisconsin: Come for the cheese, stay if your car battery is dead."

As I recall from my youth, oleo was available but it was neutral in color, although I didn't know anyone who purchased it as such. Yellow food coloring was included to change the appearance, but everyone in the neighborhood or family would wait for someone making a drive to IL, pay them to bring back yellow oleo. It may have been illegal to transport yellow oleo across the state line, making Uncle Roland and others smugglers. I forget that technicality. While we had dairy farmers in the family in central WI, we used smuggled oleo and drank whole milk. Now we use real butter but drink 2% milk. And the cheese!

Actually the Hwy 42 photo is a mild wave of pavement, the telephoto lens visual compression exaggerates the effect, making it appear to be a slalom event. You'll be surprised at its slight curves when you first drive it. It's on the way to the Washington Island ferry which you should take to explore the island to see the larger of Door county's two Stavkirkes, a nearby Lavender Farm, Schoolhouse Beach, and Jackson Harbor if you wish to catch the passenger ferry to Rock Island and hike its Pottawatomie Lighthouse.

Peninsula Park is probably the state's most popular park, definitely worth the visit, especially with the new Eagle Tower overlooking Green Bay. Many hiking trails are worth exploring including out to the Eagle Bluff Lighthouse. Being the most popular park, it's also very crowded.

Newport State park is a designated Dark Sky Park just south of the Washington Island ferry at the end of Hwy 42. It's very popular for Milky Way photography besides being a wonderful park for hiking along Lake Michigan. I've always been fascinated by the distant, abandoned Pilot Island Lighthouse ruins to the park's east at the eastern entrance to the Death's Door Passage.

The Cana Island Lighthouse should be a nice walk across the causeway with the lake's lower water level. High water the past few years meant you waited for a ride across to the island unless you chanced wading

Take the side roads along the shoreline when you can, many county parks offering views, rock formations and hiking trails. Talk to the locals, enjoy the foods, hope for pleasant weather. (Door county is subject to cool temps depending on the winds off Green Bay or Lake Michigan which can change rapidly.) The county offers many possibilities to occupy your week, I hope you enjoy your trip!

Years ago a friend bid and won "Dinner with Doc Severinsen", for a party of 8, at the Milwaukee Symphony Ball, when Doc was Principal Pops Conductor for the MSO. Our group found him most interesting, very amiable with no pretentiousness about him, making for a delightful dinner evening as if it was among old friends. His personality as well as his musical talents were both top-notch.

I thought the same from distinctive grip. However, the spur hammer and frame, plus the exposed long trigger suggest some kind of hybrid pistol or else an obscure model I’ve never encountered.

I'll second the Lake Superior Tour, it's on my list for the near future.

However, if you don't have the passport and would like a shorter trip, Wisconsin's Door County boasts the longest shoreline of any county in the US, from Lake Michigan on the east to the waters of Green Bay on its west coast. It's a very popular vacation spot all year round, naturally heavier crowds in the Summer and Fall. The Niagara Escarpment runs the length of the peninsula with many scenic rock formations, caves, fishing villages, lighthouses and tourist stops.

Try to get there before the Illinois tourists take over the hotels!

They redid the copper dome years ago, it's still in the brown stage. It's also a great place for concerts, the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra has done several there utilizing the wonderful acoustics.

The Basilica was modeled after St. Peter's in Rome, built to serve the growing Polish community in early Milwaukee. The building materials were salvaged from the Chicago Post Office and Custom House that was scheduled to be razed. Purchased for $20,000, the building was dismantled and shipped to Milwaukee on 500 flatcars, finished in 1901 after 5 years of construction. At that time, only the US Capital had a larger dome.
