Johnny Carson had the best late show. He could laugh at himself and make harmless, good-natured fun of others. When he retired I quit watching late night tv. He and Ed were the best.
Saw him in in person long ago. Was lucky enough to be in front row.
Years ago a friend bid and won "Dinner with Doc Severinsen", for a party of 8, at the Milwaukee Symphony Ball, when Doc was Principal Pops Conductor for the MSO. Our group found him most interesting, very amiable with no pretentiousness about him, making for a delightful dinner evening as if it was among old friends. His personality as well as his musical talents were both top-notch.
Wasn't he a trumpet player.

Ditto. He wasn't as good playing "Stump the Band" as Mitch Miller, but he did play a nice trumpet.
