Agree with Greenway. I have been numerous times to both but Valley of Fire does it.
Very early or late is the best time. They will kick you out of the park however after sunset.

Have you considered the Loxia line? I have two and they are gorgeous if you don't mind manual focusing. I use it for my street photography and landscaping a lot.

You can ignore all the features your "camera" offers and set everything on manual and focus on the art of actually taking the picture.

My pick would be April / March or September / October
Not that busy as in the summer months and rates for hotels / cars etc are lower as well.

Any suggestions regarding the best tie of year to go?

I missed the aurora again. It is a hit and miss thing. Best changes to see the Northern Lights is between September and March (on average ) Of course it has to be a clear sky at night.
There are website showing when and where you have the best change to see it. If you are staying in a hotel they can wake you up during the night to experience the northern light.

There is plenty to photograph without walking and a lot of places are within a short walk. If you do the golden circle anybody can do it.

Absolutely spectacular!! Great shots.

Iceland is one of the few things on my "bucket list". I'm not very athletic these days. Do you need to do a lot of hiking to get to this kind of scenery?

Good to hear you liked it. I may go back on June next year to shoot the puffins. Basically you can shoot all night and sleep during the day in June.

Clemens these are great shots. Love the beach with the Iceburgs. We are there it was full of people and raining, not the best picture taking weather.
Brent;
My wife and I went in March of this year, we booked a auto driving tour through "a Guide to Iceland" They gave us a car and gps with the hotels planned for each night. Eating is expensive but breakfast was covered at the hotels, we paid for dinners $70.00 to 200.00 for the two of us per night. Then we stopped at a store bought bread cheese and salami and the like for lunches, this was not expensive and the time we saved not waiting in resturants was a plus. (when there is one return with two buses outside how long will lunch take?) We had a great time and want to go back in the summer when things are greener.

Thanks for the nice comments. Iceland in general is expensive especially going out for dinner / hotel / rental car and of course gasoline. (things can get really expensive in high-season)I try to go right before or after high -season what helps a lot and you have less crowds. Talked to a couple from California and they where debating between a small camper or a small car and use hotels.
They opted for a small car with hotel. I normally get a small camper (really small) but good enough for up to 2 people. Get your food at the grocery store and cook your own food. Thank the cost is pretty low. On photo tours I am normally by myself and hotels don't work for me because I shoot either very early or very late in the day. Hope this helps.

Was it expensive? Do you have any suggestions on how to take a trip there?

Wow, I must say you have been very creative to get the look you want.
Did you try using HDR. It would be a lot quicker.
I can't recommending handheld shooting, auto setting, auto focus etc for interior work.
You need to control where you focus, the aperture setting for your depth of field. Setting your ISO at the lowest to get clean images require sometimes slow shutter speed especially for interior work.
Bottom line a tripod is a must. Check your histogram for any peaking so you can decide how much DR you need to photograph the scene.
