Heading to the Carribean for a cruise and doing some watersports. Will bring my dslr and some lenses but also want to do some watershots from the jetski etc.
Was thinking about getting the Sony RX100m5 with a waterproof case.
Question: is this the best, smallest, most flexible compact mirrorless with fast accurate AF or is there something competitive at 1/2 the price. I know I am paying for the 4K but I dont care. (CanonG7xii has slow AF for example...not sure about IQ)
For waterproof, the Olympus Tough TG-5 is a great camera. Add-on lenses are available for telephoto or extra wide field, beyond the built-in 25 - 100mm equivalent, such as for underwater use. I gave my daughter one for her African safari, and she is delighted with it. Nikon mades a similar camera for a little less cost, but Nikon's SnapBridge connection (WiFi/bluetooth to smartphone) is problematic. Olympus has a better solution, and also shoots RAW and/or JPEG. Olympus also reduced the sensor resolution to 12 MP, from 16 in the previous model, for better dynamic range and less noise at high ISO. That is plenty of pixels, unless you want to print at 20" x 30" and view the print from 2' away.

Take a look at the Olympus Tough TG-5. It is a waterproof P&S. I have no experience with it, but I have been considering it for my construction site observation work.
Look at the Sony RX100M4, save some bucks.

You are right...but its only 20% saving and I lose the hybrid AF ... not enough cost saving for that loss. To me, its the difference between action photograpy and stills...
Once I lose the AF speed in my decision criteria, I could save 50-60% to drop to another line of cameras.
....seems like the m5 is a standout in this regard. I could be convicned to drop the AF criteria but not for 20% on a 1000 dollar camera.
Skip the case and get the tg5.

Thanks.
I have 2 previous versions of the Olympus tough line as well as 2 Fuji XP waterproof cameras. They were bought prior to me getting into pbotography and I was always thouroughly unimpressed with the quality (althouh I was an Auto PnS guy then :-)
What is the IQ and AF speed relative to the Sony? This is my dilemma. The Sony claims to be a gamechanger in IQ (not sure) and AF (i believe them).
So it comes down to whether i want to pay a 50% premium (plus another 200 for the waterproof case) for the Sony or something else. If the Tough has good IQ and AF .... its an obvious choice :-)
Also a thumbs up for the tg5. Shocking good quality

Starting with the TG4, they have made some drastic improvements. The tg5 is a very capable camera.
my first thought would be the Sony RXO
I recently went through the same exercise and settled on the Pansonic Lumix LS-100. Takes amazingly sharp photos. Has a great zoom range for a compact.

Isin't jetskiing the type of thing the GoPro's were built for. I have seen some amazing stills taken with a GoPro. Used GoPro Hero 5 on Adorama for $200.
Finally went with the Gopro Hero6. Decided that if I never would take the P&S anywhere that I wouldn't take my DLSR....at least at my age and for now.
The gopro is weather proof and all in was 600 vs 1200+250 for weather case for the Sony.
Backward compatible mounts for Gopro Hero3 Black. I have a crappy fuji XP that I will bring along as a waterproof pocket P&S
In the future, I can see the convenience of the Sony (lightweight, pocket size and great IQ) but I just dont think I would use it now when I have the 5DmkIV (for 1500, I can get another nice lens :-)
