With any tele lens for conditions pictured above, you need to get the focus square exactly on the spot you want in accurate focus. This is easier said than done. When I am shooting such subjects with tele lenses on a tripod, I use Back Button focus so focus is determined by the AF ON button and not the shutter button. After taking shots with AF I often tweak the focus manually to fine tune the focus. This often improves the results. In the shooting conditions you have pictured, the focus point may move from the desired spot given all of the contrasty things it could lock onto. And remember that some AF settings are biased for the closest thing that may not be the face or eye of the bird.

Thank You. To your point of things may not be in focus @focus point moving, I would thik f9 would make up any minute difference. Sometimes there are small twigs in front of subject that you do not see until reviewing puicture.

I use the tripod as a support. I can no longer handhold this camera and lens - it's a bit heavy. Yes I could have shot a lower ISO, but I like to get as much shutter speed as possible. Thank You!

Thank You. The angle of the shot on 2 & 3 is the only reasonable one to shoot from. Sun was most likely at about 1 oclock looking at the eagle.

Your right it is a 200mm - 500mm. My bad.

I have a Nikon d5600 with a Nikon 200-600 5.6 zoom lens. I have taken a number of shots with it and am generally pleased with results. The first pic on a tripod was taken at 290mm iso 1000, 1/2500 @ 6.3. center single point focus. Very happy with results. ISO probably did'nt have to that high. The second and 3rd photos were same setup on a tripod iso 800, 1/2000 @f9 taken at 500mm. My question is with the focus point on the eagles head does the sharpness fall off some? I feel the 2nd and 3rd pics are soft compared to the first one. I realize with a lens of that size even a little shake from releasing the shutter can affect focusing. Would a remote help give better results?

Thanks all! Was on tripod, have to use Auto focus-bad eyes. Yes, will increase ISO - leading to higher f stop on shutter priority. May even try apperture priority with higher ISO. Cannot get closer to subject without losing angle of seeing the eagle on nest. This nest is huge, saw it from the back side last year, its almost 6-7 ft wide. So if the eagle is on the back edge and I'm not right on the subject I'm already in trouble.

Thanks for all the suggestions, am planning to go back this coming Sunday and Monday, warmer and sunny. Just hoping old man winter will finaly give up tormenting all of us in the northern states! This site is on the western side of Lake Erie, between Toledo and Port Clinton Ohio. !00 yards south of the lake!

Took this Eagle photo last week of the eagle sitting on the nest up on Lake Erie at Magee Marsh in Ohio.

Nikon D3100, set on Fine image quality, Shutter Priority, ASA 400, Nikor AF-s 18-300 DX lens,1/2000sec, f5.6 auto focus. Single focus point in middle. Original pixel size of 3468 x 2304. Was as close as I could be. I cropped the image as close to subject in Photoshop Elements. Image size now is 1733 x 1262. Focus point was on the base of the eagle, at least that is where I saw the red dot blinking The nest seems to be in focus, but the eagle appears to be out of focus. I know there are a very lot of twigs shooting up from nest and the nest is very large. Could that have been why the eagle seems soft up there or is it because of the image cropping causing it to pixelate. What gives and any suggestions? Have a few weeks before the leaves fill in on the trees to try again.

Just bought used pristine 18-300 3.5 from contact her on the hog for $750.00 including UV , ND filters. I figure I saved between $350.00 - $400.00 depending on the cost of filters and no sales tax!

Would like to buy a longer lens for my camera- either a nikon 18-300 3.5, Sigma 28-250 or tamron 28-270. (not sure of the last 2 lens specs). I like the idea of the longer tele and faster lenses-$999.00-nikon, but both the sigma and tamron are about 50% less. All 3 lens have their strong points as far as VR, focusing speed, weight. The nikon is the fastest at 3.5. I am leaning toward the nikon, just wavering on the price a little. I know other alternatives are the various 28-200 f 2.8 lens but wish for a little more tele. What do think?
Hope this makes sense!
