I just received the new Canon 7D Mark ii, shot in Camera Raw, tried to down the images in Photoshop CS6 and the program would not accept the images. I've spend endless hours trying to find out via Adobe two simple questions: Is there a plug-in to update CS6 for the new 7D Mkii and if so, how do I find it to down load. Anyone know the best way for me to proceed without endless hours on the Adobe website going in circles with no result? Thank you for your help.

Here's the link to the Adobe forum regarding this topic.

Solar filters should be used when shooting the sun. It's possible to fry your sensor, as well as your cornea. ND filters are not suitable subs for solar filters. You can find solar filters on Ebay.

Thanks! I'll definitely look there.

I purchased a solar filter and then added padding until it fit on my 70-300 mm lens hood. Normal ND filters are simply not dark enough to accomplish this picture. Attached is my shot yesterday using the solar filter. attached is the camera picture and a crop of the picture.

Thanks! I just searched amazon for a 77mm solar filter, and they have some. One was an ND 100000 a full 16.5 stop ND filter...Ok, I think I know what I need to get. Reviews say it works well, and the sample photos also look good.

Jeff, I was fortunate in 1991 to observe a total eclipse and of course it had partial before and after. We were given goggles made from two 35mm slides that were not exposed so very dark. A lot cheaper then welders mask.

If you google exposure settings for eclipse you will find that there are several settings giving you different captures. I believe if you have one setting, than do a multiple exposure burst that most cameras will do. Similar to HDR, but not necessarily combined.

Good luck. David

[quote=John_F]A long time ago I fashioned a cardboard contraption to cast a sun eclipse image on a screen and photographing that. I figured focusing the sun through a camera lens would fry the film. Much in the way an oldtimer used a magnifying glass to light his cigars on a sunny day. I cut a pin hole in stiff paper (several sheets for different pin hole sizes - early in the eclipse I wanted the smallest pin hole I could make, around the mid point of the eclipse a larger pin hole could work) and strapped it onto the side opening and make an image on the 45 degree white cardboard. Then from the box bottom work the camera where it would be in shadow. Then on the magic eclipse day our skies were in full cloud, so I never learned if my contraption worked.

Thanks. I've tried this before (not on film), and it would probably work fine on a partial eclipse, but I suspect that I would lose the sun's atmospheric effects on a total eclipse.
I've read some more about photographing the sun, and I think I need to rent a 2000mm lens and buy the correct filters which I still don't know what they are, but I have some time to figure it out. With the 2000mm lens, you can see the sun spots and the sun's atmosphere when the eclipse is full.

I am confused. What is the large bright spot? I see the three circles of light. Where only two should be.

I think the large bright spot is an aberration...a lens flare created by pointing my camera directly at the sun without having the correct equipment and/or using the right settings. I would like to learn what I need to do to eliminate that flare before 2017 :)

I am wondering how one would shoot this to get a good picture.

I am using a Nikon D610 with 70mm focal length, Aperture Priority, f22, -5.0 exposure compensation, an ND4 filter (the darkest I have), ISO 100. WB = Flash (removes pure white), Picture Control = Landscape.

I assume I need to get something akin to welding goggles as a filter, but will that eliminate the central flare that is partially blocking the eclipse or only reduce it further?

Is there some other trick that is used for trying to photograph the sun directly?

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Jeff

Welcome and thx for the good shots . I like no3 b/c it is up close and personal. Very well done with no p/p. To improve your colors you may want to choose a more vivid color and saturation setting. But, well done.

Next time, I'll definitely play with that. Thanks for the tip.

Hi, this is my first posting of my photos in any public forum. I'm using a Nikon D610 with a Nikkor 24/70mm lens for these shots. Except for cropping, the images are how they were taken...no post processing. Please let me know what you think of the images.

Thanks!
