There are three possible mergansers in Maryland. I have seen all three. This looks like none I have seen.
Because of the lack of a distinct crest I can suggest a color variation of the Common Merganser. Or.
It may be a female Smew, Mergellus albellus. If so, a good sighting. A visitor from Alaska, the Aleutian Islands.
By the way, my name is Bill, from Eastport. Thanks for the reminder about Smallwood Park. See you there one day?
Bill

Hi Bill, I have another decent shot that may help with the ID.

Most probably a Common, based on the wing bars it could be a pair of females.

Exactly. The 42 has only a 33% advantage.
"Peepable" but hardly very significant. One
good rule of thumb is that if a "peepable"
flaw is distracting in your image, assume it
is cuz your image is just too boring.

Going from the 24 Mp baseline to 42 Mp calculates to a 75% increase in the number of pixels.

Save your money for a better lens instead of wasting it on a TC. Zooms are not good candidates for TCs.

For my purposes, I want the the ability to crop—-sometimes a lot. There are pictures in your picture.
Buy the camera with the most pixels.

I agree totally. I shoot mostly birds and you cannot always get closer. Water fowl have an uncanny ability to drift out when they see you come closer.

I upgraded from my cropped Sony a77ii to a FF Sony a99 and was impressed by the noise improvement. Both at 24 Mpx. When the a99ii at 42 Mpx came out I bought that. 24 -> 42 is a 75% increase. I was able to sell my 600mm prime (12 lbs !) and buy a 500mm (7 lbs) and still have more reach.

I traveled north a bit towards Baltimore to Ft. Smallwood Park. Fort Smallwood Park consists of approximately 90 acres at the tip of a peninsula in northeastern Anne Arundel County where Patapsco River and Rock Creek meet the Chesapeake Bay.

A very nice spot for a variety of birds, especially ducks.

A was lucky enough to capture some buffleheads and mergansers in nice poses over some rough water with great sunlight early in the day in March.

These are the types of photos that make the BIF adventure so rewarding.

I am not certain of the type of merganser I captured so I am open to suggestions.

These were taken with my 42 Mpix Sony a99ii and Sony 500mm f/4. These were with a tripod & gimbal. I always use a tripod & gimbal with this rig.

Great set Tom. I too had the fortune to have Chris guide me in July of 2018. What a great guy and super skilled outdoorsman. He's among the best of registered Maine Guides.
Your skills and his produced some fine results.
Btw, did the chicks hatch late this year? Im surprised they arent bigger by August.

Hi Greg, you are correct about the chicks. Chris was telling us the same thing. We saw chicks later than normal, and the following day we saw a bull moose 'flehming' earlier than normal.

The first photo is of that event from the roadside. The subsequent photos are some of many nice ones taken soon after the loons left.

Tried selling mine a few years back; no takers at $20 plus S&H. I'll keep it until it is an antique then it might be worth a bit more!?

It is no different today. I would place it it the recycling bin for electronic devices and call it a day. Why would anyone buy it? Why waste your time?

I can see where a wired shutter release, fastened to your monopod, would be of benefit.

Just a question for Sony users, because my old NEX system doesn't have any of these issues. If the A77 is rated around 45 MB/s, does a faster card really need to be faster in camera? I understand it would potentially speed up download from the card in a USB reader, but long exposures shouldn't require much more throughput than a regular shot.

I have noticed on my friend's A7ii that his long exposures take longer to process during long exposure shots than my DSLR, but I figured that was more of a function of the camera's operating system than anything else.

I agree that the long exposure photo should require no more SD access than a 'normal' photo.

The Sony cameras have the Long Exposure Noise Reduction feature (1 sec or longer on my a99ii) that takes a picture of the same length of your subject, shutter closed, and removes the noise seen in the blank reference from the original photo. This is a feature that can be turned off/on.

I take milky way shots (30 secs or so) and never ran into an issue. I do have to wait for the 2nd reference shot to complete, but only 1 shot is delivered to the SD card.

I buy only OEM. I have bought Wasabi & Power2000, etc in the past but they always fail much earlier than OEM. I have never had OEM failures in 15 yrs.

Try Glary Utilties. Free version will do a duplicate files search. I just tested it out on my rig.
