After being nearsighted for my whole life, I chose long distance lenses as replacements for my cataract surgery. This left me needing to wear reading glasses which I fully accept.

Now that I can start shooting again, I was wearing my reading glasses because I could not focus in the viewfinder screen during an event. It was anti-climatic, because I was hoping I was done with glasses while shooting.

About half way through the opera, I realized that I had forgotten the age old maxim that tells me to check my settings before starting a new shoot.

The setting I forgot to adjust was the diopter of the viewfinder to my new vision. DUH, leaving it at the old setting would force me to employ reading glasses! Took my glasses off, adjusted the setting on both cameras and voila!!!
No need for glasses in the viewfinder... of course, I still need them to see the display panel, but luckily I learned to adjust most settings by feel so I can keep my eye to the viewfinder.

I bet you enjoy even more being able to see real white again. Most wait too long to repair cataracts and lose so much quality life. I took the same option as you, although I could have opted for one far and one near focused lens. Since I'm astigmatic I have to wear glasses anyway. I enjoy my new eyes. Have fun.

I don't know anything about this new relationship but I strongly suspect that no one injects money into a failing enterprise for the fun of it. Murdoch's group needs to turn a profit and it will expect to make business decisions that focus on profit. I wish I could share your optimism, but deals such as this usually don't end up with the "little guy" surviving.

I know what you mean, Steve. I often feel sorry for my wife and what she must endure. Dry wit can sometimes be a curse.

Spent a year at Ben Guerir in 1961-62. The night skies are unbelievable. Marrakech is a special place. You could spend several days in the Medina.

Based on everyones comments, I downloaded this book and read it. I learned so much, my head is swimming. Steve's humour is great and his tips are super. I highly recommend this valuable book. (It's not secure, so you can annotate it in Acrobat, if you wish.)

The following email address is listed in the "About" for Aperture 3.6. It might help. He's one of the authors, I think.

I saw Raquel Welch in an interview once and she said she spent many weekends at home, without a date. It seems that no one ever dreamed she'd be available, so most never called. She became a sex symbol without nudity and a first class businesswoman after her career began to wan. She's a real class act!

You must be thinking of a variable neutral density filter; that has two polarizing filters which rotate against each other.

A CPL is a single piece that rotates.

To check whether your CPL is really a CPL, look at your computer screen through the filter (with the filter oriented with the threads facing you). As you rotate the filter, the screen should go black. If it just darkens a little, turn the filter around.

What could be wrong?

If you had to flip the filter to get the screen to go dark, then the filter is reversed in the holder and is defective. I've never tried taking one apart; not obvious how to do it. Take it back.

If the screen intensity doesn't change as you rotate the filter, then the filter is just a neutral density filter and you have a counterfeit. Take it back.

It worked! I rotated the CPL and my laptop screen went totally black. How do I get it back so I can read it again???

I came to Germany in 1977 with the Air Force, retired and worked for Service Credit Union, serving overseas GIs in Germany, for the next 28 years. I married a German and decided to stay on after retirement. We have a condominium in Ormond Beach, Florida, that we visit whenever possible. Along with my D750 and RX100-III, I highly recommend retirement!

Yes, Don. The Cliff House and remains of the Sutro Baths are on the coast, just north of Golden Gate Park. I was lucky to see Sutro Baths and the surrounding museums before they burned in 1966. Sure wish I had taken pictures then!

Beautiful shots! San Francisco is my favourite city. I spent a lot of time in Golden Gate Park, the beach amusement park, Cliff House, The Presidio, The Palace of the Legion of Honor and so many other wonderful places. Thanks for bringing the memories back into focus.

Hi I want to ask for everyone's opinion on what would be a good camera for a beginner in digital photography but also keep up with me as I grow as a digital photographer. I want a decent camera. I don't want to have to buy a new camera because I have out grown the camera I do buy. I am going to ask about a Canon or Nikon. I have noticed Nikon is a little cheaper than a Canon. Can anyone suggest what make and/or model would be a good mid-range digital camera? I don't want the cheapest but I don't need the top of the line either. All of your opinions matter to me.

Welcome to UHH, JeanNate. i'm not a pro, but I love digital technology. The responses so far have been right on and all good advice. When I venture into new technology, I use Internet comparisons and reviews extensively (e.g.. "Compare Nikon D750 to Canon 7d"). The pros and cons will often highlight features that you may or may not find interesting. I often find camera reviewers also offer comprehensive tutorials on digital photographic topics. Just doing comparisons and reviews could end up being the best learning experience you could find. In my case, I have extensive Canon equipment but have recently switched over to Nikon. I'm enjoying the differences and newfound quality. Best of luck and good shooting. You may be new to digital photography, but I sense you are not at all new to photography.

I vote for the Sony RX100 iii. It's pricy and doesn't have a super zoom, but the control and IQ are unparalleled in a pocket camera. I wouldn't leave home without mine.

It matters a lot that someone would embrace a relatively new technology and grow as it grew. You've seen more from behind a camera than most will see in a lifetime. Congratulations!

I am at a crossroads regarding getting a new camera. I currently own a Lumix FZ200 and a Sony A6000. Both take very good photos. However, my Nikon S8200 compact travel camera is beginning to see its end of service and has a sizeable scratch on the surface of the lens. I would appreciate any wisdom here to assist me in making my decision.

Should I keep the A6000, sell the FZ200 and pick up a decent compact such as the Lumix ZS50 or the Sony HX90V, or keep the FZ200, sell the A6000 and lenses and get one of the compacts?

The FZ200 is light, but, much like a DSLR, is a bit bulky. The A6000 is small, but not exactly compact, either. I hate to get rid of either camera, but I need a travel compact camera that is quick to take a shot on auto mode, but also allows full manual or semi-auto modes. What would you all do here?

Take a look at the Canon SX710HS. It may meet your needs nicely.
