Hi friends. My husband and I are taking a trip to Morocco in October. We will be seeing Casablanca, Fez, Marrakech, Chefchauen, Atlas Mountains, Essouaria. We will spend our final three days in Madrid where we'll fly out to come home. Have any of you gone to Morocco? Do you have suggestions for photography, etc. (general tourist suggestions) Ideas for photography in Madrid are also invited. Thanks so much.

Early in the morning find the nearest Argania tree and get a good shooting position for it. Then wait....til the goats show up. They will climb the tree and sit and eat the fruit. Goat trees in Morocco are kind of like the Grand Canyon is to the USA. Foreigners have to see it and shoot pictures of it. Your's might be thew first photographs we at the Hog get to see "first hand". Photographs of the trees look as thought they have been run through Photoshop, but they are real. Goats in a tree? If someone tries to sell you a "cheap" goat, shy away! Hope your trip is great! Share some photos with us, please. Have fun.

Linda, one of the things we do in each city we visit while on vacation is hire a local cab driver to tour us around the area. We negotiate a price for 1/2 a day (or more as the case may be), if we feel uncomfortable in making a cabbie choice we ask the hotel concierge to recommend one, and we have always end up seeing things the regular tours do not include as well as stopping as often as I wish for photo's, etc.

You got there just before they started building the wall. Lot of history happened in our lives...

Thanks to you all. We are looking forward to our trip and will take advantage of your suggestions. "Goats climbing in trees..." go figure! I'll be taking lots of photographs and will post some on the UHH when we return.

We went to Morocco some years back,, and had the feeling we were walking back in time. My hunch is that not that much has changed in the ancient towns. There is so much to see, enjoy and photograph. If your tour takes you to Volubilis (near Meknes), you'll see nicely preserved Roman ruins, dating back to the fourth century. Also near Meknes (not too far from Fez and Rabat) are the Royal stables. This is an amazing structure - built by a crazy sultan - designed to house 12,000 horses. Some interesting shots can be taken - play with the light. Take your camera into the souks - with a guide - and ask if you can take pictures of some of the local folks (they'll probably ask for a small gratuity), and you'll have some of the best subject you could want. Enjoy!

Spent a year at Ben Guerir in 1961-62. The night skies are unbelievable. Marrakech is a special place. You could spend several days in the Medina.

I would encourage a stop by Chefchauen (sorry for any mis-spellings): a city in blue with a medina full of photo opportunities. The Fez medina is a must-see (difficult for photography but still not to be missed) but you absolutely MUST hire a local guide for that otherwise you're guaranteed to get hopelessly lost. Valleys of the Kasbahs and Dades Gorge are also great.

I took a 2-week photo tour of Morocco in 2013 and came home with great images (including goats in trees!) and enough memories for a lifetime.

There's great shopping, but be prepared to bargain. I did a lot of damage to my credit card but got some incredible souvenirs, though that seems like too cheap a word for the wonderful stuff I got.

I hope you enjoy yourself half as much as I did. The variety of places within Morocco is incredible and the people incredibly warm and helpful.

If you can you should try to go to Volubius. I was there in the early 70's.
You can imagine yourself walking down the main street of a Roman town.
If you can get there before sunrise or stay until sunset you'll get some fabulous images.

You've all been so helpful...thank you so much. I must admit to being a little "apprehensive" about going to Morocco, but you have all put those worries to rest. I'm going to consider this a wonderful adventure and just enjoy the experience...and try to get some great photos, too.

I am in Spain and going to Morocco in about 4 days. Never been there, but have been in several muslim countries. The more "devout" the people, the more they don't like their photo taken. I nearly got killed in Turkey a few years ago taking a photo of the young men doing their ceremonial washing before entering the mosque.
So.... I now do people pictures with a 200mm lens (70-200 zoom, so I am not intrusive. If it will be obvious that I am pointing at a single person, I go ask; point to the camera and try to ask; if they say no. leave
good luck
