Does this faster rating help in the capturing of the pictures or just the recording of them onto the card itself; (quicker?)(buffering?). I just don't know.

I do strictly photos. I have not and at the present time do not do videos with my camera.

I thank you all in advance for your comments or replies.[/quote]

With my t3i I started out an ingenue with PNY Professional SDHC-- 32GB for personal, 16GB for dance photos, both 20mb's speed, both class 10. The camera seemed slow for action so tried to improve every way I could and upped the cards to Sandisk Gold Extreme Pro class 10 SDXC I, 64GB/95mb for personal and 32GB/95mb SDHC I (my order error) for dance. Results--maybe a tad faster shots into camera, though found setting changes made more difference. However, the loading time into computer is MUCH faster. I started with a Vivitar series 1 reader 72-in-1 Hi Speed reader/writer and had to switch to a Transcend USB3 in order to load the SDXC. From info I could glean online and from UHH writers (aren't they great?!!) I have too upgrade to get in-camera speed. But first I am working on testing myself on settings. Hope this helps a little

I loved those screens in the old days. You can still buy them.

For the D7100 -

Learning curve--what exactly does a fresnel screen do? I just read the first ref site and they are available for t3i's. Why do they make manual focus more accurate? What cameras(or rather photographers??) need them? thanks

Borrowlenses and other larger online rental companies do not require deposits. :-)

For me deposit is a big consideration. My local pro store, 8 miles away has reasonable rates, but their deposit policy is, "A deposit equal to the estimated replacement cost of the Equipment is required for customers without an established credit account, or as Pro Photo Supply otherwise requires." So... I can rent a Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 AF-S VR II for 30 bucks a day, but I need to have $2400 ready cash for deposit.

hmm. yes that will be a consideration. Thanks for your experience. Hope I find one not as costly.

Sorry. I tried to follow the line of response but got confused--not sure which initial reply was to me and whose photos you wanted to see.
I do agree with Anand's self-rebuttal--everything helps and don't treat anything as a "bible". After a while you can go out and fiddle around without worrying about mistakes or changes that will hurt the camera, but a word of warning?: If you are in the manual and you try changing settings to see what they do(definitely do this!!!) you MIGHT want to write a list(or undo right after) so you can undo for different conditions (personal experience here!! LOL)

You can rent lenses from 3 days too a month+ it all depends on your need and your budget.

I typically rent for 10 days with delivery mid week, that gives me two weekends to test out and around 5 to 6 sessions. That usually is enough time to test a lens and see if it will work with my style of shooting.

Thanks Annie Girl. Yes I could include a dance weekend and enough time for personal study--or plan for a month when dances are back-to-back. While thinking about it can one rent flash? I don't think my 430 is enough; not sure want to spend on the 600.

I've considered, but haven't yet, i asked about if they give rent credit toward a purchase and they said no...i might still do it at some point...maybe a 24-70.

I wondered about that too--rent-to-buy. Who did you try?

I have rented 4 or 5 times from them and have never been disappointed. The shipping and handling fee seems high ($18) but that is shipping to AND from you. You just have to put the lens back in the LowePro bag and rearrange the packing material. They ship via FedEx. Is there an office close to you?

That cost for something as tender as a lens doesn't sound bad at all! thanks for the $ info. Tangible comparison

So you want to rent a lens to try it and decide whether or not to buy it? The rental period might not be long enough to fully evaluate it. If there is a particular lens or focal length you're considering, read reviews and ask for opinions here. Then look for a refurb, or possible, a used one.

A refurb will come with a warranty and be in good condition. With a used lens, you get a lower price, but you take your chances.

Thank you Jerry. I haven't gotten as far as checking the companies but length of time has been a concern. I would steer clear of of plain "used", even from a friend actually (too many horror stories). I nervously bought a couple of refurbs (not camera-related) and have been comfortable so that could be an option. Yes, I will ask. This blog is part of my daily study!

For three years now I have been renting cameras, lenses, and filters from lensrentals.com. They are the biggest and best from the reviews I have read, and I have experienced excellent customer service from them. Their rates are reasonable, their web site is user friendly, and their selection is excellent.

Great! Good qualities! Will check them out also

I've had great experience with cameralensrentals.com. I actually live nearby and pick up/return my lenses without the shipping, but I know they ship all over the country and make it easy to return. I've had nothing but wonderful luck with them and rent lenses when I have a big trip or event. Nice local people.

Will check it out! If there is one near you in "rural IA" there could be one around here?
