You posted your settings but not a photo illustrating your issues, and failed to indicate what lens you are using.

Are you shooting jpegs? Jpegs seem to be coming out a bit soft right out of the camera. Try increasing the sharpness, I think it's in the picture style menu.

Is the lighting fairly dim? You need 2000 ISO to get you 2000 on the shutter?

I shot this eagle my first day out with the new MK II.

Beauties!!

Recently there has been a flurry of activity here discussing the merits of DXO lab reports.
Certainly their findings are valuable as they would indicate the best performance attainable by either a sensor, lens or the two in combination under that test conditions.
Some here, seem to use the DXO results as a sort of a Bible, yet others don't seem to view the DXO tests as an accurate indicator of actual camera performance.
And most of the conprehensive camera testers refer to DXO results throughout their tests, but their overall performance conclusions don't always parallel the DXO tests.

So my question to you is: How important are the DXO lab scores to you when it comes time to pick a camera or a lens or recommend one.
Do you use the DXO results as your primary decision making tool, or do you look at other tests as well, or do you rely on some other means to pick new equipment? How do YOU feel about DXO?! ;-)

The cameras and lenses I use don't score very well on DxO, and I know the reasons why. But if you know nothing of how the technology in your hands works, you might be tempted to buy gear according to what a site like DxO says without ever really knowing what it means, or how to take full advantage of those numbers.

As far as I'm concerned the gear I have makes me the best photog in the world!!!

I suggest setting it to "magnify" or "focus peaking"

Keep on shooting and reading! It's great to hear when folks get out of program mode and into manual and their shots improve!

Last year I had the same question. I found a Panasonic 100-300 lens with stabilization built in. (The so called "equivalent" is 200-600). For a camera, I bought the Panasonic GX7.

As long lenses go, the 100-300 is not expensive at $600. At Yellowstone NP I stood next to people with $15,000 Canons shooting some wolves. The picture in the viewfinders were about the same. Their prints are probably better, but I like what I got with my $1300 system.

Two favorites that might give you an idea of what it will do were shot in the The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum and are attached. The camera was on a monopod with the foot tucked behind my belt. Pictures were shot RAW, processed and downsized for uploading.

Any Hoggers have experience with this lens?

Your new lens will instantly be your main lens. At 12mm you'll have a great wide angle, at 40 you'll have a great portrait lens. You will spend countless hours and days trying to decide where this lens is the sharpest. You will be amazed by the ability to get super close, almost macro, with auto-focus and even closer with manual-focus. Even the shortest 10mm extension tube will get you so close your subject will touch the front element. Its so sharp your macro crops will look like they were shot with a 1:1 lens. The toggling focus ring is extremely useful and precise.

If you come from 4/3, you will see what they mean when they say that this lens beats the world class Oly 14-35mm f2.

I am starting to explore the focus tracking ability of this lens and can tell you that so far, its performance exceeds my skill to track.

A Sony user died and went to Photographer's heaven. When he arrived he was being shown around by a guide. He came across a huge walled in area with big signs that read "Silence". He asked his guide, what was behind the walled in this area. His guide replied "Shhhhh, this is where we keep the Nikon or Cannon fans. They think they are the only ones up here.

Digital photography is made with both a camera and a computer. Film photography is made with a camera and a darkroom. The computer is like a whole new set of brushes that open up a new set of possibilities. I think the art reflects that.

The REAL thing canikon doesn't want you to know is that there are other companies out there selling products much more exciting, stretching out to test the possibilities of new technologies while these big two play it safe... And boring.

Sorry to hear. When we hear of a bad experience with a new product, especially one as highly regarded as the xt1, we tend to want to blame the user... But ANYONE who is familiar with the workings of high end cameras should have had no problems like the ones you had. Is it possible that you didn't adjust that ONE dial or setting and everything fell apart??? I doubt it. If you can shoot with the d7100, the xt1 should've been a no brainer. I will err on the side of the photog and ponder the possibilities that you got a bum rig.
