If you are going to take pictures of the homeless make sure you have their consent. Well they are on the street and thus I think the law allows you to take their pictures without their consent but I wouldn't do that.

That's an extremely sensitive area shame here ...I know I see them a lot.
I might not want to feel like I am exploiting the people just for a show
I will think about that
Thank you

Allow me to ask a question. What make this town great and better than any city in the states? You are better able to answer this question. Walk around and chat up ordinary people on the street. It may be the closeness of people, the family vibe from restaurants and other stores, it may be buildings with unique and interesting architecture. It may be how people commute in cars or just the sidewalks. It may be all of these. I would like to give a worthy suggestion but I would be way off-base! If you want to know what makes Brooklyn, New York interesting, I can show you. I can’t show someone a great place if I haven’t been there!

Take a walk around for several days. Choose several different subjects. Put together a few sample photos that make the town interesting. I know you are on top of your game, so make it happen!

Brooksville is basically the County Seat of Hernando County Florida. There are a few places to eat but mostly Law offices and the big old court house. City hall office building is on the side of a bank.
The City of Brooksville is really only a square mile .There is, opposite the city hall, a Public Library.
You do not see many people walking around.

Well I had my Merchants exhibit at City Hall in Brooksville florida . Now the curator wants me to do another photo show . Does anyone have a suggestion for a subject? A few local people have suggested People and their Pets. Or some people said mailboxes. the still others said portraits of older folks who have been together for a very long time. any suggestions from photographers here>?

We relocated about 6 years ago. Took some real paintings by a minor, but known artist to a local dealer. He explained that "people today do not buy paintings". Though it was large (and the reason to consider selling) it hangs in our home today. My wife is an artist and (though we 'fight' for wall space) our home is filled with her paintings, my prints and a few other folks real artworks. Visitors are routinely amazed to see so much art. I guess many folks don't go to museums or galleries these days.

Museums and art galleries are now pretty scarce in my area. Hernando County Florida is not around the corner from the major city. Tampa. Also it is even further to get to Saint Petersburg Florida or the Polk Museum. I am from Manhattan so I guess I am spoiled re the closeness and ease to get to "Art".
I will say the Salvatore Dali Museum does a great job with keeping their exhibits current. Still a long drive away.
Some museums have closed after covid.
As for art galleries, there are far and few between that are reasonably priced. Most of them carry very pricey. I have seen many galleries that charge $2,000 to $ $12,000 for an artist I have n ever heard of. I even look them up on the internet and fail to find these artists.
we all know the marketing fo art has little to do with talent. Oh well that's life. Enjoy

Thank you so much. I started drawing horses when I was 4 because we lived in the city and I couldn't have one. As I grew older, I started painting many things, so 82 years later, I'm still at it. (and I finally got a horse...77 of them at one time). It was as much fun to raise and show them as to paint them. The best of both worlds.

A dream come true for sure...what a gift you have! We are lucky to have you here.

Yes It did feel good. At 76 I finally found something to use my creative energy. I have three very successful adult children and we are close. That is a collective family love.
The next exhibit might be pets and their people. Not sure yet. What do you think?
I would love do children but people are very sensitive about that ( Not that I can blame them ).

I am not sure if anyone remembers, I was getting ready to have a photo project displayed at out Brooksville Florida City Hall building. The curator was very helpful. he encouraged me to do this for the Brooksville community.
We hung the photos together plus the description of each merchant ands color photos of the stores. The portraits of the merchants her done in B&W 8 x10 framed with matts.
I also got a write up in our local Newspaper, The Hernando Sun. It was nice to be acknowledged.
I am looking forward to creating another photo exhibit.

thing I have painted for myself in a very long time. Now that I have retired ...almost ...maybe from doing commission work, I had a blast painting just what I wanted to instead of something to sell. Oh what fun!!!!

You certainly captured he strength of that beautiful horse, I would like to see the natural habitat as background.
Great painting ...really

[quote=coolhanduke]I have since quit all printing and fully retired from any photo related sales but here is my two cents.

I used to produce canvas and metal prints. I did them all myself so my overhead was pretty low and therefore could undercut the locals selling the same scenes for much more.

I live in Redondo Beach Beach, in Southern California. I have Hermosa Beach and Manhattan Beach to the north of me.

My photography consisted of mostly beach scenes or maybe special events (the space shuttle flying over us etc.)

I have displayed at art fairs but my most success is setting up a display in my driveway on a fairly busy corner. I know everybody does not have this luxury but it saved me the fee they charge for a booth at a fair and I sold just as much if not more.

What I found was that the people stopping by only wanted Redondo Beach scenes. Manhattan Beach has a beautiful pier (which is way over photographed by others), which I have some really good shots of. But do you think I could sell any? Nope.

The biggest client was parents that had kids going to collage back east somewhere. Especially in the north east. They were always in the market to buy a beach scene to send back to them or give it to them when they come home for the holidays.

There is a gal that has a gallery not far from me. She has beautiful shots of the beach as well as Yosemite etc. All of them are printed on metal at least 40x60. I think she does well but she is in a top rent area so not sure how much profit is involved. Her works sell for like $3,000 and maybe more.

The other thing I found is that now that everybody has a smartphone they all think they are photographers and feel they do not need to pay you much for your work or not buy anything at all. This is the affect that you may be seeing in your observations.[/quo

I think you are amazing in your marketing skills,,,well thought out and executed.
You just gave me an idea!n I am goin to get some shorts of Hernando Beach amd surounding areas. I can TRY to sell them in a front yard sale ..I'll have nothing to loose... might be fun also
thanks !
