My 18-55 and 55-200, which have always worked fine on my D40x, also work just fine on my D7100. But so far my favorite and best results on the D7100 are coming with the 35 1.8G. I got the lens based on Ken Rockwell's article, and I really like it. I do recall having read somewhere that firmware updates are resolving some of these issues where the camera doesn't quite get an accurate read on lens ID data. Or something like that.

Update: Okay, Santa brought me a lens for the D700! It's a 50mm f1.4D, just what I was looking for. Now if I can just figure out what to do next.

I have a couple of extra days off now, during the holidays, so think I'll get out and see if I can trap some pixels. I did spend part of the day yesterday arguing with the camera over some settings in aperture mode. I lost. Okay, I may have to read the instructions. Am I confused? Not sure, it's too soon to tell. But I will endeavor to persevere.

This is fun!

Windows 7 full support will continue till January 12, 2015. After that, extended support (security fixes only) will go till January 14, 2020, unless you purchase a support subscription, which would include non-security-related fixes) through the 2020 date (must be purchased before April 15, 2015).

So, technically, security-wise, Windows7 is good to go for a long time yet.

That's per this article:

Yup. I have played with a Surface a bit and they are pretty cool. I can see how one could get going pretty fast with the UI with some practice. But my thirty-inch Dell monitor did not come in a touchscreen version, and I am not willing to give it up for a touchscreen. My PC has a fast Core I7, 24Gb of ram, and W8.1 (with Classic Shell's great and free start menu app. set up to operate like W7, on a 250Gb SSD. With a one terabyte Caviar Black HDD for storage.

The only way I can think of one could top this awesome 30" monitor would be with two of 'em! Which would take a really high end video card and power supply. I looked into it, and neither the power supply nor the video card would likely fit in this PC's case (Dell 8500).

My only real complaint about the whole W8 thing is that the latest version of IE is so very, very buggy and glitchy, constantly locking up and glitching out and malfunctioning. Just not quite enough so to make any other browser preferable. Everything else works well.

Thanks, everyone, for the warm welcome! Pat, I'm on the South edge of Pflugerville, so not far from you. Who knows, one of these days we might collide. Right now I've got a lot of homework to do to bring myself up to level with the D700, so I can get out and start doing some walk around shooting. Once I can scrounge up a couple two or three lenses I will get it going.

One thing's for sure. There are a lot of photographers these days. It would seem the digital era has spawned a lot of growth in this hobby. That can't be a bad thing, I think. I've spent so much of my life in a hurry, never having time to even slow down, let alone stop to look around. I hate that, I know I've missed a lot by living at such a fast pace. Time to change that, and I know this will help me do it. And I live in a beautiful area, too. There are all kinds of possibilities around here for subject matter, and one of the things that has kinda gotten me going in this direction is some of the work I've seen by some locals that is just really talented. I'm looking forward to jumping in.

I'm new here, hope to mooch some help to learn more about digital photography.

When I was young (long ago and far away) I took photography classes and learned a lot from my Dad, who was an avid film photographer with a darkroom and the whole nine yards. He let me use one of his beloved Nikons (can't remember the model now) and I became enamored with black and white photography. I really enjoyed it for a while. But then came marriage and kids and work, and I lost touch with it, no time. No time for years. I kind of regret that now, but it's spilt milk.

I'm 62 now and have a granddaughter who is 14 and an avid and prolific photographer. She has gotten me excited about it all over again, and so I've decided to get back into it as a hobby activity I hope to pursue a little bit.

I've been playing around some with a D40 I acquired, and got the full frame bug recently. So I went out and picked up a pristine low mileage D700. Ordered the Busch Guide for it and am studying that now. Don't have a lens for it yet, so I'm watching my local CL for a 50mm to start with.

After that I will likely turn into a wild man, annoying friends and family members to tears with my constant badgering and hovering around inside their personal spaces with a camera. But they know me, so I figure they know what to expect. And if they don't, well, that's just too bad.

I hope to learn a lot, though the digital experience is kind of new for me. And all that stuff I knew when I was young? Well, I killed those brain cells long ago. So it's all brand new, eh?

I have the entire Adobe CS5 Creative Suite working just fine on W8.1, no issues whatsoever.

However, you do have plenty of choices with a new computer. When ordering or buying a new PC, you can specify that it has W7 in most cases, or reinstall if you just can't get W7 on the specific machine you want. Unless you have or are getting a touchscreen monitor, I'd stick with W7 unless you are pretty savvy with operating systems. In W8 the user interface is designed for touchscreens and can be problematic as is for use without one. It can, however, easily be set up to function like W7. W8 is faster than W7, and really rocks on my new PC with an SSD. W7 will too. There is lots of info out there on this. A little research will help you decide.

You can PM me with questions - happy to help if I can.
