Thank all of you for your help. I have 60 acres that borders a swamp. I usually just load up my camera some material to kneel on. I have lots of bugs and tree fungus, along with mushrooms/toad stools, turtles and frogs and such. It seems these things are plentiful enough that what I see....I can take a photograph of. They look fairly good in the review on the camera but when I upload them, focus is my problem. I just need to use you guys advice...practice, practice and more practice. Thanks again!! the turtle was laying eggs. The turkey feather pic was the only one out of 41 tries!!! so....practice!

Thanks for your input. I will do the practicing. I got the d5000 because I thought that the articulating LCD veiwer helps me to see my subject better when my camera is up-side down on my tripod and real close to the ground.(where I'm finding it harder to get down there and back up) But it's getting a little better with practice and a remote release. What length extention tube would you suggest?

I have a d5000 Nikon with a 105mm prime. I am thinking about getting a Nikon TC-200 or TC201 teleconverter that Ken Rockwell says is a good combination. 2 things...Does it work well with my d5000 and will it be a useful addition? I'm already having trouble with getting a clean, sharp focus. This being a new hobby at 60 yrs old! There's so much to learn!!!( and remember!!)

Don't know what you want to spend but look into Benbo...It has a unique(although it's heavy as a tank!)design. Think of a mic boom like a drummer would use to sing while playing..then you can angle the boom of the tripod, that your camera is mounted on can swing all the way to the ground! I do macro close to the ground w/d5000 Nikonw/ 105mm prime because the view screen articulates so my image is right side up in the view finder. I can then focus and use a remote shutter release. Its made in England. Got mine used for about $125. It supports 27lbs! There are cheaper models. Just google Benbo tripods!
