I am thinking about purchasing a Tamron AF 28-300 XR Di LD VC
lens for my Canon camera in the $650 price range-would anyone
know of a Canon manufactured lens in the same range that would be a better choice.Thank you for all suggestions.
My main camera is a T2i.

Your camera has an APS-C sized sensor that has a crop factor of 1.6. If you multiply 1.6 x 28-300, that's an Equivalent Focal Length (EFL) of 44.8-480 (or normal - heavy telephoto.) The closest would probably be the 70-300. The 28-300 was designed for wide-angle to telephoto. To get the wide-angle to telephoto equivalent, divide by 1.6, and 28-300 would be 17.5-187.5, so an 18-200 for your camera, made by Canon + several others (the Sigma is highly rated) would be more appropriate. Just depends on what you're really after.

Nice math but wrong. He wants a lens compaired to a 28-300mm lens only made by Canon. Does not matter what math you do, a 28mm is a 28mm lens. If you are going to figure the crop factor you need to do it to both lenses. So the 18-200mm figured your way would be equal to a 11-125mm lens. You cant devide, or multiply, for one lens and not the other.

Leave the crop factor out of it and compair apples to apples, not apples to oranges.

And if you took a vote you might find a big following of Tamron lenses. Many here rate Tamron higher than Sigma.

I stand by what I said. 18-200 on an APS-C is equivalent to 28-300 on a full-frame (for which the 28-300 was created to be a wide-angle to telephoto walk-around lens.) Not sure what he's looking for: 28-300 absolute (normal, not wide-angle) or walk-around lens?

Mind if I ask where you found it for that price? I'm in the market for one also, and $950 is about the best I've found.

Another is http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/camera-lenses.htm

This site has lots of good tutorials on other photography topics, as well as a beautiful gallery and a very good forum also (did I convey well enough that I get a lot out of this site?).

I love the second one especially. Your eye is drawn first to the red tulip, then you notice the leaf on the left that balances it well.

Cleaning out my mind of the "way an Iris should look." These were taken two years ago as I was experimenting with in-camera multiple exposures. I use a Nikon D200; Nikon 200mm F4 Micro; Tamron 90mm F2.8 and Nikon 70-300 mm zoom. Looking at these it appears the second pic (Tupelo Honey) was taken with this later lens. Nothing more than F8 - SS unknown. Circumstances prevented me from working with Iris last year....I hope to change that this year.

Riff off what ever you want - engage me - thats when I come alive....just like most subjects.

All three shots are very nice. Love the abstract look of the first one, especially.

(I may have posted one or two of these on another topic, but don't think so. These were taken this past weekend near Eufaula, AL.)

Here's one of mine.

I wanted to make sure you all got the message about the black background. I use a piece of black velvet as the background.

So how do you get that black background???

Grandma, you might want to try a still life on a piece of black acrylic sometime. Very nice reflections. Could still use the black velvet as the background.

I think it's a great shot. Any shot that makes the viewer scratch his / her head has something going for it. Love the color. I've tried detail shots on automobiles with not nearly this much success.

And I, on the other hand, think the black background adds drama to the shot.

I am a beginnner, and I have the introductory Cannon T3 cammera. I have been taking photo classes at an art school. I have a cannon75-300mm lens and am thinking about upgrading this lens. Any recommendations? I was looking at the cannon 70-300 with image stable. or the Tammeron 18-270 with image stable.

Another lens to consider for wildlife is the 400mm 5.6L, tack sharp and 640 equivalent on your camera, with a 1.4x TC (which I also have) it's equivalent to 896mm f/8 (no autofocus on your camera beyond f/5.6.) Also it's easier to handhold when required--not nearly as heavy as the 100-400.

Ok..I can do that. Do you have a brand or advice on the filte?

In general, go for the multi-coated, higher quality ones. If on a wide-angle lens, go for the slim rim version. Also be sure to go for the circular polarizer, not the linear, which doesn't work well with digital cameras.

We are scheduled to go on a cruise the end of April. I'm trying to decide if my tripod is necessary to pack. Any suggestions for this week long cruise will be welcome. We have ports @ Bahamas, St.Thomas and St. John of the Virgin Islands. I have a Canon Rebel XSi with a Tamron 18-270 Lens. I'm also wondering about buying a 2X Extender for maximizing farther away shots. :D

Just returned from a Bahamas cruise. I took my large tripod and carried it around with me in Freeport and Nassau--without using it once. I did use it back in Florida at a wildlife reserve, but not much since it was sunny. I'd recommend a small tripod for occasional use (the Joby Gorillapod sounds interesting), but not on the ship unless it's docked--too much vibration.

Rokinon 800mm. Not a good lens, but I like this shot.

I'll have to play with the curves a bit to get more contrast out of it.

Great shot. Many years ago I stacked a 2x and a 3x tele-extender on my 300mm for EFL of 1800mm and shot a red-sun sunrise with a tree in the foreground--looked like Moses' burning bush. You might want to try that with your 800.
