I'm certain that was the SD card, but thanks. I , too, had a similar devstating experience with my film camera. Glad those days are behind use!
I used my D 5500 reformat option.
Crazy but my local store who has a recovery specialist was unsuccessful eventhough they found
Pictures before and after, date wise , but no Christmas pics!! Their software ran for 3-4 hours!!!
I tried these suggestion unsuccessfully. The SD card is now at my local camera store. No fee if they can't recover it---$14.99 on a cd if they can!!!
I have had little success. I have given up on recovering from the PC, because I do not think it is there. I am now focusing on the ST card. Thanks for all the great suggestions.
Correction: I didn't create a file, I created a folder. Too, none of the pictures were named. Is the SD card a possibility!
I shot family Christmas pictures, created a file "Christmas 2016" on my PC, transfered the photos from my SD card to the folder on my PC (I thought!), now the folder is empty.
In the meantime, I have reformatted the SD card and taken more pictures on the SD card. Does any one have any magic solutions to recover my Christmas pictures . . . and saving my marriage!!??!!
I just made the same move you're contemplating. I went from a 5200 to a 5500 and from your two lenses to the 18 to 300. I am delighted! Go for it!!!!
I RECENTLY GOT AN 18-300 AND LOVE IT. I HAVE A D5200, AND AS I EXPLAINED TO MY WIFE, I NEED A D5500 TO TAKE FULL ADVANTAGE OF THIS FABULOUS LENS. THE BROWN TRUCK IS IN TRANSIT!
I REPLACED AN 18-140 AND A 55-300. FOR ME, AS AN AMATEUR, IT IS FAST AND SHARP AND IT ABOUT THE SAME SIZE AND WEIGHT AS THE 55-300!
I just replaced my 18 to 140 and my 55 to 300 with a 18 to 300. I think it's the ultimate walk around and Is very high-quality.

Do you know if the d5500 is also on sale?
Thanks everyone! I did get the newer f6.3 version of the 18-300mm. I now need to satisfy my GAS and waiting for Black Friday will be tough!
No one has weighed in on my
main issue----is the D5500 worth $330 more than a used D5200? Please help me with this.
