The camera might be set for back button focus. Turn the camera on and instead of using the shutter release button to focus use the AE-L AF-L button on the back of the camera to focus if the camera focuses then take the picture with the shutter release button.

With View NX once the picture is open go to adjustments then picture control and click on launch utility, in the utility click on manual adjust then click toning option and select either sepia or B&W
