I had three people witness this because it seems so bizarre. I have 2 Nikon D5100 camera backs, one with a kit lens and the other with a 70 - 300 lens. I often take photos in situations that make changing lenses too cumbersome and potentially damaging to the lens. Thus the 2 identical cameras. I was on a photo workshop. Took shots with both cameras-downloaded each card from each camera to my laptop and subsequently backed the images up on an external hard drive. SO I had all images safely stored that were taken that day. I put the cards back into their respective cameras to format and before I formatted checked one to see if I had successfully displayed the histogram (cameras were less than a month old and i was still getting to know them). When I went to display an image in the playback menu I got the message "Folder contains no images". Tried in the second camera with the other card and got the same message. I took the cards out, thinking could I have formatted these and not remembered...senior moment...NO, when I put them in the card reader in the laptop the images were there on each card. Took them out again and put them in the cameras and each said "Folder contains no images". Can anyone explain how this can happen? I do not use the folder option in either camera because I don't know how to- so there were no folders on either camera that I set up. After having 3 camera workshop colleagues see this so I knew it just wasn't me they were also shaking their heads. I subsequently reformatted the cards and they worked fine (both Sandisk cards). I could explain it as a camera glitch but these were two cards in separate identical cameras giving the same error message simultaneously...never happened before....any idea? The Nikon gremlin???

If you are using the program that came with your cameras, the default way the program loads the files to your computer erases the card after the files are transferred. Unless you have delete files after download unchecked in preferences they are deleted.

I use Nikons ViewX to transfer images from my cameras to the computer. It has a feature to delete the images after transferring if I want to. You might check your preferences in your software to see if there's such a setting.

See I can't understand why one doesn't simply create a folder on the desktop, put the card into a reader and copy/paste, been doing that since digital first came out.

No chance of deletion, your images stay on the card until you chose to delete them

Yep. I use Lightroom. Import the file; backup everything twice; then format the disc. I cannot imagine a situation in which I would _choose_ to erase the files from a disc before I had confirmed I had multiple backup copies of that file.

If you, Barb and everybody else has this problem, the answer, from a programming point of view, is simple. Checking the "Delete Images" box in the program does not erase the images. Instead, it clears or erases the File Allocation Table (FAT) or index on the card. Any subsequent image files written to the card would write over the previous images (it says here in fine print......). The only way to completely erase the files is to re-format the card. Oh, yes, why do the images still show up in a list on the computer. One of two reasons: either the algorithm used be the camera only erases an internal or Camera-specific portion of the FAT, or the computer has an algorithm built into the reader circuitry to recreate the FAT in a manner readable by the computer, but not by the camera. Everybody, except one pompous twit who is telling you how he does it and thinks the OP is a dolt, had the correct solution; un-check the auto-deletion box.

I create a folder on my desktop and copy and paste the files to that folder. I don't use software to transfer the photos. This is the way I have been doing it for years and this has bever happened before.

I don't use software. I create a folder and copy and paste. There is no box to uncheck.

Do you use Control-C and Control-V to copy and paste or do you use selections in a menu?

Just highlight them right click copy then right click paste, surely nothing is easier

I asked BarbK a specific question. I would prefer that she, and not you, answer it. Thank you.

Try practising what you preach Moron! Mogul did use 'quote reply' to ask a question to a specific poster, why did you feel the need to interfere again. If you have nothing better to do, go try to sell some more crap on eBay!!

You do not know the answer to the question I asked her. Until you do, please do not try to answer for her. Thank you.

My memory is hazy on this. When I used to switch cards from my D70 to D300, I could not see pictures taken on one camera and see them on the other camera. I had to go into the menu system and tell the camera to show all pictures. Hope this helps. Also Nikon has a help phone line.
