Thanks Steve , will try all you mentioned. As to keepers I was told while on our trip by another cruiser that deleting pictures from the card will affect picture quality. He told me not to delete any until I download to computer. Do you know anything about this . They told me it messes up the pixels. One thing I still need to get is a flash anyone have suggestions. Thanks Mike.

I bought my SX50 from help on here. I was looking for a camera for our Alaska trip. This camera worked out great for me. I say so many people with a big bag with different lenses and such but could not get certain shots because no time to change lens. I am glad I went with it. Still learning all you can do with it and playing with settings. Not sure about all that yet but with practice I will get it. Here's some shots of my trip.also if you have not been to Alaska try to put it on your bucket list. It is so beautiful my wife and I loved it.

Just a distance shot.

Basically it IS a "Bridge' between the P&S camera and a DSLR.
A super computerized camera with"almost" all the qualities of a DSLR as well as so darn many of the bells & whistles of a DSLR.
Smaller, lighter and easy to use auto programs as well as manual settings - there is lots of info on UHH regarding the SZ50 & bridge camera - do a search in the topics and enjoy what you find. The big plus is the price is good too.
Harvey

Thanks a bunch Harvey. So glad I joined this site . Have got so much help. I thank you all.

Consider the bridge cameras like the Canon SX50 - it can do everything you need - macro, telephoto, video - all with decent quality, and all at a decent price. No need to change lenses, it is not heavy, etc.

This is the one I have been reading about . Can you tell me this why do they call this a bridge camera. What is a bridge camera. Thanks for the info. So many has recommended this camera.
Thanks Mike

Optec Rain Sleeves - $7 for 2 - keeps your camera dry and easy to use.

My friends keep saying DSLR to. I just think to get what I want the lenses are going to cost me a lot. I am reading about the Canon sx50 . I really like what I have read. Thanks for all the advice.

Just my two cents worth on the cards. If your camera does HD video, one or two larger cards for that (16gb plus). For the stills, don't take one large card, take multiple small ones and rotate them. That way, if one goes bad, you don't lose the whole trip.

Thanks great advice, Mike

In 2009, my wife and I took a 10 day adventure trip to Alaska. I pondered a new camera for several months. I borrowed a Canon Rebel and tried it out. In the end, I did not want to carry the weight of a DSLR around, so took my present camera, a Canon SX-30. If I were going today I would take a Canon SX-50 like my grand daughter has. It takes great pictures and video. Be sure to take enough memory and an extra battery or two. I'll post some of my pictures soon.

Wow pictures are great thanks for sharing. Funny you say the Canon sx50 . I just got done ready all about that camera and really like what I found. Thanks so much for the advice. I have to agree I really don't want to carry a bundle of stuff around with me. This camera should do it all. Thanks again ,Mike

Hi Mike and welcome! It all depends on what you want to spend and how far you want to go with the hobby. Let us know a little more about these things and you will get better answers. The DSLR's can get pretty pricey if you go and get the wrong gear to go with them.

Hello , I don't know to much about all these DSLR cameras and my wife wants me to keep it simple for her to use , that said I am looking to spend up to about 700.00 if possible and some point and shoots look good to. I have been reading on the canon sx 160is and the sx 500 sx they look ok but not sure seems to have what I want. Also the reble for a starter DSLR looks ok. Any help would be great . We have saved for awhile for this trip and really want to capture some great memories. We are doing a 14 day cruise and land tour in Alaska, thanks again look forward to any help. Mike
