I think it's a lovely landscape. The structures are awfully small and I wish I could see them better but that does not diminish my appreciation for the concept of the photographer to have them minuscule and dwarfed by the natural elements. The subdued color palette is very effective (bright colors would overwhelm the small structures). The composition is very appealing - Rule of thirds-style, with foreground, mid ground and background all full of interest and overlapping. I am always very fond of matching "puzzle pieces" - shapes that echo each other in some way - and the reeds or oats on the lower left have the same shape and tone as the dark cloud formation in the upper right. This pulls the image into a cohesive whole even though the structure elements are small and spread out.

There is a little noise that should be dealt with somewhere along the line. And there is some loss of detail in processing in things like the weeds and dune edges (wonder if Topaz is involved?). But as lovely as this is, it deserves to be framed, so even if it takes reprocessing to get some of the little kinks out, it is worth it. I think it would be very nice as a canvas print.

Minniev....thank you for your thorough appraisal!! You saw more than I did when I was composing the shot!

Country Mama....the first time I posted the photo did not attach, so added it again and it now shows on my computer. If it doesn't show up on others, how do I delete the post?

I wanted to capture the bridge connecting the Upper and Lower Peninsula's since I had never seen the water frozen before. This is OOC and really bad!! I think I have a dirty sensor which may explain the spots in the sky. What I need are recommendations on what settings I should have used to get a clearer more precise shot!

The lens was a 17-40mm f4L USM.....good glass. It was shot at f16, 1/800sec and 400 ISO. I wanted the shot to be clear the entire expanse of the strait, but it didn't happen.

And can editing help any? Please feel free to edit, but explain your process.

10MPlayer.....took your suggestion and made it a b/w shot with closer cropping. After all the comments here, the chances are pretty nil for me including this particular photo in my book endeavor; but I was curious to see how the shot would look in monochromatic.

snails pace....you have broached a subject that is very applicable to my endeavor! You are so right---once posted online, images are fair game for those who are not bothered in the least about plagiarizing.

Country Mama.....I really appreciate your comment----it is a perfect example of why I glean so much from this forum!!! I am not a boat person, so my entire focus was on the water, the fog and the backdrop. This shot would indeed seem incomplete to a watercraft enthusiast!

Wow....I really treasure your comment, Nightsky!! I didn't think about the homes----you are right, I wouldn't appreciate having my home posted in a book without my approval!!!

Magicray......great questions?? They would be in either a 8x8 or 12x12in book, printed on high gloss archival paper.
Some of the photos will stand alone on a page, some will be cropped with room for added scripture, some spread over both pages.

I am contemplating a photo book using local photos of Northern Michigan. The gallery I have some of my work in has agreed to stock it as long as it would appeal to tourists. I need to learn which of my photos are book worthy (printable) and which need to just remain web photos.

So I need your help, please. I will be posting a series of shots to get feedback along with re-edits if you can improve my shot in any way. (please include a description of the changes).
