A camera vest is actually very practical, especially if you travel a lot. At the airport, before security, put all your bits and pieces (wallet/billfold, watch, chains, coins, keys etc) in the vest pockets. Then it's just a matter of placing the vest in a tray and collecting it once you have gone through the metal detector. That way you know you will not leave any of you stuff behind in the tray. Easy. Then you can use the vest for your photography at your new location and repeat the security process on the way back through the airport.

I've played drums in a number of bands. Have played in front of 20,000 people and love my photography & my motorbike(VTX 1800c). used to, in my younger days, work freelance for a Rock magazine & radio station taking photos of all different music genre stars. You have to go where the money is or where you get sent. I quite enjoy taking band photo's as well as getting into the venue for free.

Lets think logically for a moment about the reasoning behind not being allowed to take laptops, pads & camera's into the plane cabin. The thinking behind it is that they may be stuffed full of explosives and blow up the plane.
Firstly "johnny" terrorist does not care if the explosive mass is in the cargo hold or in the cabin, it will still detonate and kill a plane load of innocent travelers, ala the lockerbie plane disaster. Can be triggered by an electronic watch, on the ground or on the plane.
Secondly. All luggage, cargo hold or cabin, is screened and can be subjected to explosive testing. So what are we saying that the personnel screening cabin luggage, don't know what they are doing?
So banning carriage of Laptops, Pads, Camera's etc is not going to make an ounce of difference. It may even create problems in that the boredom factor (passenger has nothing to do) gives rise to anger and negative creations/thinkings.
If a Camera must go in the cargo hold, then it needs to be adequately protected. Pelican case are good and there are many alternatives to pelican cases on the market these days. all have foam inserts and will/should adequately protect even the most costly camera. All can have a small lock fitted, but will not keep the most ardent thief out. That said, ALWAYS ensure you have taken out insurance and ensure you give the details of your camera equipment and estimated replacement value to said insurer. Test your insurer- ie, ring them and find out what is actually covered, get it in writing. Nothing worse than returning home with broken/damaged camera equipment or worse yet, lost in transit equipment, only to find the insurer will not cover the claim. Ensure you have photo's and receipts for your equipment and only send the insurer copies of said receipts. Make sure you keep your SD/CF card with your photos, with you in your cabin luggage/pocket. At least you will then still have those precious moments when you get home. Well, I think I've covered everything, but please if anyone can think of anything else, let me know. I work offshore and thus travel a lot. I also belong to a large camera club with lots of members who travel and all are interested in this topic and what to do when travelling with camera gear.

Having worked and lived in Singapore a number of times, I found Singapore cheaper than Australia (where I live) and I would say it would be cheaper than NZ.

I always do my homework in that I'll know what I'm after and then I'll get a home country price or two. make sure you have it written down so you can compare.

Then I check duty free in my home country. Then I go to Ebay and there is an Ebay Singapore. That will give you some idea of prices in Singapore and if duty free in your home country is the way to go.

There are plenty of places in Singapore to check for photographic equipment such as the already mentioned Funan centre or the ground and first floors of Sim Lim plaza. It is also worth checking Lucky plaza up Orchard road although most things bought along Orchard road are more expensive. I would not forget to walk the markets at china town. Most stalls are in front of shops and there are a lot of Photographic shops along the market routes. remember you will need walking shoes as you'll be there a while.

On the day you're ready to leave, don't forget to go to the airport early. There is a two level butterfly farm at terminal 3 with waterfall. There is a very large koi pond and a great variety of orchids at terminal 2. All great for photos. And once you check in your luggage, do not go straight through passport control & security.

Go downstairs to where the car parks come into the airport. There you will find a vast array of food stalls serving most of the beautifull Singapore dishes (Malay, Chinese, Indian and Western) at very cheap prices. A lot of Singaporeans will come there on the MRT (train) to eat.
Once you've had you're fill, go through passport control and take photos of the butterflies, Koi and Orchids. The terminals can be reached via the small trains going between terminals.

I hope the above helps.

Hi Jerry,

I was afraid your lens may be non IS. I did not notice it in your original advertisement and unfortunately at the moment I can get the same lens for $420 AUD @ http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/1114556453?utm_source=trigger&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=watchlist_pricedrop&utm_content=product.

Even if I take your price and add the shipping cost of say $50, taking it to $535 USD and then take the exchange rate into account, your lens would cost me 535.00 USD = 737.732 AUD

As you can see that is now significantly more than the Australian lens at $420 AUD (details provided above). and the hassle of you having to get it to me and me getting the money to you.

So I'm sorry to have to do this but I have to decline this sale.

I thank you for the trouble you have taken so far and hope you are able to sell the lens in the US in the very near future.

I hope you understand .

Regards

A couple of further questions,

Does the lens have image stabilizing? And for shipping purposes what is the approximate dimensions of the total package.

You said the total package weight is about 5 lbs, is that right?

Many thanks for your quick reply, and yes I'm very interested.

Many of the members of my Camera club, Northern Exposure Photography group (which you can access online by searching for the name and then Western Australia behind it) use the lens you are selling

I'm currently at work, running a medical clinic on an oilrig for some 190 personnel, off the Western Australian coast and do not get back to Perth until late 23rd (your 22nd) June.

In the mean time I can find out through FedEx how much postage will be and I'll get back to you as soon as I can.

Unfortunately I have a Canon 1.4 and 2 X converter already.

And of course, please put the full amount on the duty papers. duty into Australia on new items is currently $900 and I nearly certain that on used items, there is no duty payable.

My email address is piet56@hotmail.com

Consider the item sold and I'll get back to you as soon as I can

Kind regards
Dr Pieter Berveling

These are a couple of hundreds of photos I took whilst visiting Paris last April with my son. I took the photo of the Arc De Triomphe before we crossed this very busy round-a-bout and were promptly give a serious dressing down/talking to by a Gendarm (Police). We only escaped his "clutches" when he told us to wait as he went to talk to three other men who had crossed the road also. A few moments later and from the top of the Arc De Triomphe, we saw the three men get put into a police car, so we were lucky.

There were more soldiers under the Eiffel tower than tourists. The photo of the Eiffel tour was taken from the top of the Tour Maine-Montparnasse (Maine-Montparnasse Tower)also commonly named Tour Montparnasse. It is a 210-metre (689 ft) office skyscraper located in the Montparnasse area of Paris, France. Constructed from 1969 to 1973, it was the tallest skyscraper in France until 2011, when it was surpassed by the 231 m (758 ft) Tour First. As of February 2015, it is the 17th tallest building in the European Union. The tower was designed by architects Eugène Beaudouin, Urbain Cassan and Louis Hoym de Marien and built by Campenon Bernard.

I agree with the need for high speed cards. try www.wish.com
they sell a lot of electronics and especially cards and thumb drives.
They even sell 2TB thumb drives that are real good to store photos onto and do not take up much space in a drawer.
I got cards off wish.com for my 7D and have had no problems with them.

These were taken on a very hot day for Paris (29 degrees) in April 2015 with a 'Bigma' (Sigma 50-500mm) mounted on a Canon 7D.

We nearly got arrested at the Arc De Triomphe as we managed to cross the road to get there. Anyone who has been there will know how crazy the traffic is. Three Algerians, who did exactly what we did (cross the road through the traffic) did get arrested. We made a quick get away while the Gendarmerie (police) we busy with them.
