The movie "Kodachrome" on Netflix is a movie I enjoy. The character Ben in this movie makes a couple of comments that I really believe. I was a photographer making a living shooting only film for 25 years. After that I shot digital for about 10 years. I feel more comfortable and confident shooting film. Most of my years shooting film was with medium format, Hasselblad. That is just me.

Here are the quotes from the movie:

"We're all so frightened by time, the way it moves on and the way things disappear. That's why we're photographers. We're preservationists by nature. We take pictures to stop time, to commit moments to eternity. Human nature made tangible."

"People are taking more pictures now than ever before, billions of them, but there are no slides, no prints. Just data. Electronic dust. Years from now when they dig us up there won't be any pictures to find, no record of who we were or how we lived."

Thank you for your time, have a great week.

Being a film and digital shooter both in stills and video, I loved hearing Hoyte van Hoytema give a shout out to the use of film. I have not done a ton of video shooting with film but for 20 years I shot nothing but film for stills at weddings, family and just about anything else I needed to photograph.

Stepping away from comparing specs, is there a camera that you just like?

It could be ease of use, results, handling, fun to use or any of those and more. It may even be a camera that you return to even when, by some measures, it is obsolete.

My 2012 Pentax X-5 "Superzoom" 16 MP bridge camera is one. I was surprised they were still going for around $120 when most others from that time were $30.

Fast handling, easy control, but not much manual exposure options and a decent lens. It does have some visual highlight/shadow warnings that are handy in the less-than-perfect EVF. More than once I've returned to it, or rediscovered shots taken with it that I liked.

Thoughts?

I have 2 that I really, really like. My Hasselblad 500 c/m and Nikon F2AS. I like the feel and sound they make, and the photos are so real.

I own the Hasselblad X1D 4116 edition with the XCD 30mm. I purchased both used at a very good price and have enjoyed them. I purchased them as I also own 2 Hasseblad 500c/m and 50, 80 and 150mm lens. They both are used for different things as I still enjoy shooting film. I also still shoot with a Nikon F2as that gets used more that my digital. I am very happy for your X2d purchase, use it for what ever you want and don't let anyone tell you it is not needed.

I have one and have used it many times in the past. Not so much lately, hangs on the back of my office chair. It is a LL Bean, may be a fishing vest but not sure. Had it for 20-25 years. Love it!!!

Mike, are you talking about a V mount lens? If so, I remember this happening to me and as I remember, there is a small spot on the mount end of the lens where you put a small screwdriver in and cock the shutter open. I need to re look at this and maybe do a google search to be sure. Let me know what happens and if I find more info, will let you know.

I did also get the Hasselblad tripod mount as most of the time I use it on a tripod. Focusing is hard at times but since I am not in that much of a hurry, not a problem. I have been thinking of getting the XCD 45p for a walk around lens but have not pulled the trigger yet.

I love my older Hasselblad film cameras and use them often. This digital camera I am loving just as much, just need more time to learn how to use it the best.

I have the x1d 4116 and only use my V mount lens via adapter from Hasselblad. It works great, a bit large and you have to use the electronic shutter, but other than that, I love shooting with it.

"Digital is like shaved legs on a man - very smooth and clean but there is something acutely disconcerting about it."

Do not know who said it and it did not help or change anything in my photography life, I just like it.

Yes, I have 2 500cm's along with 50, 80 and 150mm lens. Used them during my wedding, portrait and whatever else I shot during my pro years back in the 80's upto 2005. I will never sell them. During the time I was using them almost every day I never had one break down, or stop working. Sent them in once a year for a look over, they just work.

As soon as you land, head east, forget the city. Travel through the cascades to the dry side of the state if you can. You will get photos that are not like what everyone shoots. Enjoy your stay and have a great time.
