Kid, your paranoia is showing. I was just referring to my own ethnicity as an example. Am I aware that Negroes are a minority? I was born at night, but not last night. I am quite aware of it. I was attending a high school that was 40% black before you were even a twinkle in your father's eye. I don't need a lecture on the plight of the black male in American society. How about black women? They have to contend with anti-black racism AND abuse from angry black males. Trying to raise children in an environment of drugs and gang warfare.
I marched in numerous civil rights protests and also served eight years in the US Army from 1963 to 1969. I remember separate water fountains for white and 'colored'. I remember growing up poor. Our street was paved and had sewers but a block away the streets where the blacks lived were nothing but dusty roads without 'waste management'.
I can see the progress made in race relations since the Selma marches and the civil rights movement. I am optimistic because I believe humans to be intrinsically good.
How can conditions improve for ALL Americans? Education. Education. Education. Jobs, Jobs. Jobs. Hopefully time will heal all wounds and future generations will be more color blind and there will be more opportunities for all. Lot's of hard work ahead for EVERY American.

That only proves the we are more alike than different. Yet, it's those differences that makes the work urgent. I assure you, I have no paranoia. I am however, aware of the reality of the Black experience. It is unfortunate that Black men still harbor the "breeder" mentality that creates so many fatherless children. Happily there are still strong Black men who stay in the home and raise their kids. Education is, I agree, a social imperative. Once we become more focused as job creators rather than job seekers we will become the change we dream of.

I am trying to think of a "intimate term between" whites "that excludes everyone else from using it". Striking out. Now I am adding Orientals, Hispanics, Indians (west and east), etc. still shrinking out. I guess nobody else has been mistreated enough to get a special word. Yeah right.

you are close to the truth but you are afraid of it.

I think the gatherers of soon to be slaves in Africa were the same race as those gathered. That doesn't excuse those who transported and used them as slaves but the white man did not go chasing natives, their own brothers or cousins did that.

Big mikey...there is clearly a prejudice in our justice system. Blacks and whites smoke grass at the same rate, but black prisoners for it outnumber whites about four to one--some justice!

Nice knife twist on the last sentence...we're 'civilized,' so they aren't.

That's a "White" touch.

You left out the little sneer...get it next time.

Bye, bye...

What's with 'the other N word you guys call yourselves'?

When they use that word about each other, it doesn't stand for degradation, as it does when you (we) use it. Get over it...don't use it; don't even refer to it.

The white man abducted these people 400 years ago, and deprived them ever since. There was no chance for their decent education until about 1965.

We destroyed their family unit for our own commercial convenience, and even now, we try to keep them from voting.

You wouldn't want to go to those sh*t holes, but you don't mean to insult--just his entire culture and heritage.

Pardon me for barging in, it just seemed so uninformed, and so unjust.

I'm gone new...

I agree. It should never be said. The proper ethnic name is Negro but Southern speaking whites corrupted the identification with "Nigra" to the present N word that became totally derogatory to black people. I think the use of the N word had become so negative that what was a lemon to some was made into lemonade. It is now an intimate term between blacks that excludes anyone else from using it. Words have a way of evolving and devolving. Praying that the N-word dies for lack of use.

Like I said, it doesn't matter what you call me as long as I am treated fairly. If I feel that Black people in America are denied access to the economic and social benefits of this country, I have a responsibility to express it. Contrary to what you think my friend, slavery is not gone; not as long as there is no official apology for it. The indigent people of America have been apologized to, the Japanese have been apologized to for their WWll detainment, why not the Americanized Africans? Slavery is a crime and if it is not recognized as a transgression against an ethnic group victimized by it, then slavery and its mentality still exists. Africa was not always a s*hole, at least not until the West tried to carve it up and exploit its resources. That is what has made it undesirable and inferior to being somewhere better. It is no chip My friend of the Great White Way, it is a yoke and your only solution for resolving it is to send us back. 150 to 300 years ago I would agree with you but today I reject that solution. I'm staying and saying.

I need to add this caveat before leaving this thread: I did not say my dark skin made me feel less American, I am all American. I responded to the quote "I don't care to be known as a Dutch, German, French, Polish American. Just an American would be fine."
I merely suggested that poster add the color of the black American to his melting pot. I think it would make a difference.

Well, lets see--I think Negro is a lot nicer than the other 'N' word you guys call yourselves. American is American is American. "against their will"--yep agreed but you weren't so it's really not a argument--slavery is gone and no one owes anyone anything from 150 years ago. You're the one that said dark skin made you feel less an American so that says you aren't that happy here therefore go where you will be is the thought that comes to mind. Can't blame anyone for not though---I wouldn't want to go one of those sh*t holes either. Also I never said you were inferior or undesireable. Lose the chip on the shoulder.

I understand how those of your situation come to the conclusions you do but I refute your conclusions. White people in the US today accept any acceptable black person. What is an acceptable black person? The same as an acceptable white person but with darker skin and to many with perhaps more desireable and attractive physical attributes. Many whites and blacks are integrating and enjoying life together and raising children together. Many top corporate CEO's are black today. Your take is not fair. I truly believe the white community embraces our black citizens and will strongly step forward to make certain they feel comfortable and share affection with us. It is unfortunate you do not share these feelings and instead dwell upon our rejection of the scumbags of your race among us. You forget that we reject the white scumbags just as readily while jealously trying to protect the dignity of those like yourself. I reject President Obama's shopping trip bullshit hallucination as his problem. Not mine. He is demonstrating paranoia even though millions of whites have proven their acceptance of him.

I appreciate your honest response. I did qualify my assertions by saying "some". Unfortunately some of that "some" are in positions of great economic and political power. I did not intend to imply that Blacks are all depressed and suppressed, we have come a long way from the market squares. After all, the President of the United States is a Black man. I just find it odd that because of his unique identity that he is vilified for expressing a position whose situation he shares with so many who look like him.

What, because you're Negro you don't feel American?????? You were born there, that's what you are. If you identify with another nationality---go here--you'll be happier---well at least until reality sets in.

The distinction of ethnic origin, my Northern friend is not out of context. Every group identifies their origin. All who are born in America are truly Americans. It's all about what word you choose to make that identification. When I first wrote, I didn't call myself Negro, yet you decided that's what you wanted to label me as. It doesn't really matter what you call me as long as you treat me fairly. Here is a fact you probably have not considered...Africans were the only ethnic group brought to this country against their will. Now that we have made our contribution to building this nation, free labor to the economy, fighting in wars to secure and protect freedoms, we are considered a burden to "Americans". Africa is the land of my heritage but not of my birth. I reject anyone's response to go to a land not of my birth simply because I recognize that dark skin color is perceived by some as inferior and undesirable.

President Obama has a right to say as much about Trayvon Martin as any of you have a right to express how much you hate him. In the Black experience you can never appreciate the negative impact racial profiling and institutional racism has on the Black male. If you are white you have never had to deal with the insult of women grabbing their purses. You have never worried that you were denied the housing you wanted in the neighborhood you wanted to live in because you weren't the right color. I have a young grandson, and I tell him you can be anything you want to be but be careful, some people will hate you for your skin color. I agree that it is always unfortunate that young people are dying on our streets but that should not give anyone the right to indiscriminately threaten a life because you "look" different. That being said, Barack Obama became President to accomplish two things...To the the first African American president and to be the first re-elected African American president. The door is open and you can't close it. Peace

I upgraded to dslr photography a year ago beginning with a Nikon D5100 (where within 3 months the d5200 appeared :o( ). I really like taking pictures of stuff and hope to consider myself a photographer someday. I hope to continue to develop an eye for subjects and composition.
