Toss up since you aren't into either camera and you can't go wrong but examine them to your particular taste and go for the one you like best..It's the photographer that takes the photographs not the camera it's just a tool. I,m a Nikon man but I have used em all in the past Olympus,Canon,Nikon, Leica,Pentax, Minolta,Fuji,Sony... a good photo can be had by all/
Check out my photos on Viewbug under nikondaddy and she how i use a camera...

The idiot who told you that knows nothing about cameras but a little about Canon... Nikon, Canon been the top cameras in the world for over 50 years on a knock of of the Zeiss Ikon and the other the Leica...The only new camera is Sony which is hybrid of Minolta and then there's Pentax been around longer than the Nikon DSL. I have shot Lecia,Canon, Pentax ,Olympus, put my money on Nikon but Nikon or Canon is matter of taste and up to the photographers taste not some other one's opinion. Nikon 7000 is great camera I own
a D-90.

You got everything you need...and if you really want to learn photography master equipment with your talent and let it up grade you by knowing a camera system you can master rather a commision to a camera sales person... I could a photo course with one camera and one lenses if I had too but i know too much to have too..I,m old school studies cameras for five years before i could own a decent one...

Actually President Kennedy admitted he blew it in the Bay Of Pigs incident but today's leaders don't admit to any mistakes or make any apolozies.

I used a nikoncoolpix 990 with 3 megapixelsand used studio light and turned out 8xl0 size and below for senior portraits and did a few 11x14s and up graded to a 9 meg Fuji90
for a while and none of the customers ever complained while using photo shop and retouching. I nopw use a nikonD-90 and have used the 6 meg d-50 and d-70 there is a differnce in sensors and the DSLR quality is better than the coolpix and the fuji 700 and 900.

Did you say you were going to the grand canyon the bigggest widess hole in the ground and you can,t get it all in a 18mm lenses it,s not a back lot 12 by 12. People take wide angles photos of the grnd cnyon with telephotos and they still come out looking wide. What you need a camera and perfect lighting situation and shoot the hell out of adigital card.

A little cropping on th e dog and as far as depth is concerned you used telephoto lenses if you want dept photograph thedog upclose with an extreme wide angle then the trees will show up but why? The dog is the center of interest and the focus is sharp AND YOU HAVE A GREAT OUT OF FOCUS back ground.Study photos of dog photography and this one may qualify as possible good example.

The 35mm would give you the 50mm perspective and a 75mm view which is the one with a 50mm lenses. Great for portraits. These are great lenses and if you up grade to full frame will be great shooting in natural light.
