I found this while reading the Huff and thought some of you might find it of interest. He has a different style than I usually see. Hope you enjoy.

The SMC Pentax-DA 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 ED AL [IF] DC WR

I didn't make up all the acronyms!

I have one on it's way to me and was wondering if any of you happen to have one. If so, what's your opinion of it? The reviews on Pentax Forum is quite high in most cases, but as usual, there will be someone who had a bad experience with one copy and will drive the overall review points into the ground.

I like the focal length range and I REALLY like the fact that it's the WR variety. My K-50 body is weather-proofed, so I always like it when the lens I'm using is, also. A lot of very nice features, including a silent DC motor auto-focus.

Yes, I have this lens and the IQ and build are very good.

Thanks for the reply. Do you use a Pentax camera as your main camera? The reason I asked was, I have approached the administration about developing a separate section here on UHH strictly for us Pentaxians. They replied to my query and suggested that I ask other members about the general interest in such a forum.

If there are enough of us, it might be an interesting sub-forum where us Pentax-shooters could talk about our gear.

Yes, Pentax cameras are my main cameras. I use my K3 for my studio work and carry my S2 around when I wander.
Would love a Pentaxian sub forum. I think it could be very helpful.

I have the superb DA 50mm f:1.8 and it's color rendition and brilliance are absolutely top drawer among the lenses I own. I'm thinking of buying the little DA 35mm f:2.4, but I was wondering if I could expect the same color characteristics of the DA 50mm. If so, then it's as good as done!

The construction is almost identical between the two - 6 elements in 5 groups, same coatings, etc.

I realize that the 50mm has 7 rounded aperture leaves vs. only 6 (un-rounded) in the 35mm, so the bokeh would "suffer" accordingly.

So, the question is.... do any of you Pentaxians have the DA 35mm f:2.4 AL.... and what is your opinion of it?

Thanks for any personal experiences you can comment on.

Dewman, I have the lens and have been very happy with both the color and sharpness of it.

Before any of you go off on me, I'm NOT trying to start a conflict as to which is better. I'm just curious to find out how many share my experienced with the brand and what particular models they use.

I'm always amused at how vociferous many who shoot "OTHER" brands become when they get even a slight hint that there's a perceived slam against their favorite. Chill, my brothers and sisters. That's not what this is about. ;)

I use a K-3, a K-s2, and for fun sometimes pull out the old Kx. I really like my Pentax. Of course, I liked my Canon, Nikon, and Oly too, but they're all good.

Thanks, Frank. It's difficult for me to give up on something I thought I could do but in this case discretion is the better part of intelligence. I shall stop deluding myself. My developing opinion since trying is that anything other than picture elements inside a photograph does not serve the writing or the photograph. Haiga is not for me. There may be some who can make it work - I'm not one of them.

It is very hard to do Haiga in English without looking like a Hallmark card because we do not use the brush as an artistic component as well as the image. I put my Haiku on a separate paper next to the photo in galleries and taped to the back when storing. Can also use the words as a title sometimes.
Good try though.

Thanks to everyone for their input regarding camera bundles. I don't know the difference between a "lens kit" and a bundle. I have made it easier to decide on what I want because I know what my preferences are. I have never been good a composition, so I won't focus on landscapes, or the like. I spend a lot of time outdoors and I want a good telephoto, as I like birding. My first preference is going to be a good macro lens because that is my chief interested. But I don't want to be limited to that, and that's why I want a good telephoto lens as well. I want the Nikon D3300 in Red. Yes, call me picky, but I want red. I want those two lenses mentioned. I have tripods, but need filters for the lenses. Now can someone help me go from there? Did I mention that I don't want to spend a fortune? My significant other is buying the camera, lenses and I don't want him to drop dead from sticker shock. What are the other essentials I should have. Essentials., Thanks. I hope someone can steer me in the right direction, and hopefully to the right retailer so that I can find what I want.

I bought the red 5200 a while back with the 18-55 to start. Next lens was a tele followed by a nice macro. It was a nice set up and I still use it a lot. I did get a long macro and another shorter macro for close ups of rocks and glass and stuff. Get the red and the 18-55 and add on later.
have fun.

Four books on Japanese Haiku, one book on Ancient Chinese poetry and a lovely big book on Roman history. Yummm! And a case of PG tips tea.
Everything I need for winter.
And I wish a merry day for everyone.

I just finished watching QVC and on that program they were selling a Canon Rebel SLR1, white in color along with two lenses: 18-55mm, white in color and a 75-300mm black in color. I have never seen a white DSLR in a store much less in the hands of another person. Speaking for myself, I would be hesitant in using a white DSLR in public because I would not want my camera to become the focus of everyone's attention,

Your outlook may be entirely different. I would like to hear what you think about using a white DSLR in public with a white 18-55 mm lens.

A storm trooper camera. Neat.
Truthfully I don't think using a white, purple, or red camera would bother me at all. I am not overly insecure and enjoy what I am doing.

What do you photograph?

I've been reading and answering questions in this forum for about a year now, and I see lots and lots of different perspectives and backgrounds. It's cool to read others' points of view and such.

My own photography has run a lifetime gamut... First I recorded family and friends, as a kid. In junior high, I got into school newspaper and yearbook photography. In college, I covered concerts, events, landscapes and travel, all with color slide film.

After a brief career in college radio and commercial radio, I became an AV producer, doing training and promotional slide shows, filmstrips, videos, and photo illustrations for print, in a company that printed school yearbooks and portraits. Eight years of that led to 25 more years in that industry, in eight very different but related roles.

I've continued to photograph people, processes, products, and procedures, in addition to the occasional event or landscape.

But what I most want to know is, what subject matter gets YOUR creative juices going? Are there any really weird specialty photographers here? Where do you point your camera most often?

We had a nice rainstorm overnight and it left some interesting photo ops. I needed to get out of the house and this provided the perfect excuse!

Taken with a Pentax K-50 using SMC Penax-FA 100mm f:2.8 macro lens.

ISO 800.

As usual, very nice work. I really like the first one. Aphids in #7?

Sirlensalot & Rjaywallace & Nikonhermit ---

I have owned 2 Pentax cameras some time back..
A K200d and a K-x. I liked both cameras, my K200d served me
well. Then I upgraded to a Kx, it was a good camera but did not like the way it focused. I think I would like to try a
K-50 or S2 model, and that is why I asked the question. Right now I am using a Panasonic G5 and would like to retry a Pentax again..
Thanks to all for your advice..

I have the kx and the K-3, both have worked very nicely for me. Tomorrow my S2 arrives and I am looking forward to playing with it. I never had any focus problems with the Kx so I guess I was lucky. The S2 promises to be a useful back up for my K-3.
good luck with your choice

do not forget you are buying for the long haul. with each year that passes, your camera will cost you that much less. these, even though digital, will stand up and perform wonderfully over the years, and will be the last unit you ever need to buy - so think it over.

That's true, and at my age it probably would be the last.
