When you photograph people in color you photograph their clothes. But when you photograph people in B&W, you photograph their souls! ~Ted Grant
And by the way ... I think you can take good pictures of animals in B&W

I've been shooting at the Mcmillan greenhouse at UNC Charlotte for the last couple of years, February being the best time. I've posted a few shots on the following Flickr link.

Great capture. I like the horizontal view also, 'cause that's how I imagine it looked to a sailor. And looking at the photo, I think there's a sea monster just over the horizon.
I think that closer, smaller aperture [for more depth of field] and no flash as suggested. Of course that means slower shutter speeds which necessitates a tripod. And ya got watch that background .. I always have trouble finding an angle that doesn't have a sign. Where did you shoot these?
beautiful third shot ... the lay of the rocks and slope of the ridge all lead your eye right up to the lighthouse.
Nice triptych presentation. Your subject is backlit by the sky and so your camera will underexpose. If you increase the exposure then the sky will wash out. So if you have a flash then this is a situation where it might help by filling in the front of the swinger.
Thank you, but it's the scenery
Scenes from the AT. The first photo of a future thruhiker was taken at Massie Gap in the Grayson Highlands. The second is just below Buzzard Rock, looking towards Whitetop mountain. The third was taken at Carvers Gap, just north of Roan mountain on the NC/TN state lines. And the last was taken at Elk Garden, looking up towards Mt Rogers.

Jbaz, I'm not sure what you're saying.
These are all negative scans. The first was Kodak Tmax100, the second was Legacy Pro 400 (Fuji Neopan 400), and the third was Fuji 160H. The B&W negatives are a little more difficult to scan so it usually takes a few tries, moving the tray around until it looks right. I've used the new Kodak Portra 400 with excellent results. They supposedly designed the the film to be scanner friendly.
