I understand that prime lenses usually offer higher image quality. But given the fact that people use smart phones to take pics these days and quality seems to be good enough, does it even matter that primes offer slight advantage while having major disadvantage of fixed focal length?

Do you still use primes at all? For what purpose?

I cannot imagine not having my EF 100mm and 50mm lenses. I probably use them the most. I shoot with a 5DMarkIV and the nifty fifty (1.4) works so well when I want something light weight to carry. I am amazed at the quality considering the price. I also prefer macrophotography so Canon's EF 100m works perfectly for me.

One thing I'd add to the conversation is this (opined on another thread): Technology isn't foolproof. If it were, there would never be updates! And the more complex a piece of technology is (today's cameras are a great example), the greater the chance of some form of future failure. Metal fatigue and "planned obsolescence" are like rust: They will slowly eat away the goods until some day, things snap.

It seems not a week goes by when someone on this forum barks about an updated piece of software (no names here) no longer working on their ten year-old Windows 7 laptop, or requires a new CPU chip. Sorry folks, staying current is the price of admission in today's world.

Absolutely agree! I use third parties quite often for clarification. I will spend hours pursuing an answer to a question I have before I ask my kids, who supposedly think they are more tech savvy than me! They have no patience at all and don't know the "how's" or "why's" of technology, they just learn through social media. I will admit, they have social media down to a science. Seems that's all they care about.

I did the exact same thing about 6 years ago and LOVE the Canon 5DMarkIV!!! I could still use my nifty fifty (Canon 2.8mm) and my 70-300 lens works great. I hardly ever need the tripod with the 5D MarkIV, as I did with the 7D. I still have my 7D and all of the lenses and never use it so I am thinking about selling it. I debated on a mirrorless camera for awhile but the main thing I would really liked about that camera was its weight, but after putting on the lenses, it's not that much lighter than the 5D. My favorite lens is the macro 2.8 lens and the 24/105 lens and the 100/400mm. Of course the 50mm is great and I recently purchased the 50mm 1.8. Good luck with your decision!

Was there a hard learning curve when switching to mirrorless? I currently use a 5DMark IV and love it. Don't mind the weight for the most part...a nice workout for my arms.
